IMO you got a lot of time before you daughter can drive the BMW, who knows what all could of changed in the next 10 years, who knows maybe she will hate it lol. ~ pure speculation on my part!
That being said I would feel more comfortable with a slow, reliable, efficientish, practical car for my child. So stock 318ti w/ m42> 2.5 (m50)
But it seems like you want to mod and put some power down

Don't build the m42 its not worth it, for more potential, more reliability, put in the m50. Especially for the long term.
Off the top of my head not much swaps over, the front is the same, but there isn't much to swap over. Maybe someone else can add something else, but other then vented front brakes and m50 swap I think you got what needs to be worried about.
