Default ebay short shifter

I was looking at this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Quick-Shif...es_CarParts_SM

to add the circlip, space ring and nylon cup would only cost pocket change anyway.

I am curious if Powerflex might make some bushes for the selector rod and other areas of the assembly.

are these parts below universal regardless of region and model of your TI or z3 should i say

25 11 1 434 148 Shift Lever (Z3 1.9)
25 11 1 220 600 Suspension (nylon cup)
25 11 1 220 379 Circlip
25 11 1 220 439 Spacer Ring (2)

does shortening the shifter mean you have to replace the boot and knob (not the rubber one)
also there seems to some type of transmission mount protector in this pic you can just see it peeping out
at the bottom ...

what is the part called rubber that is like a boot/glove/nipple that is on the trans .. looks like the shifter rod pushs against it?

i would stay away of any type of ebay short shifters, levers, etc. except if its name brand like UUC, Ireland Engineering, or such. The ebay made ones are crap.
I would just go with a Z3M coupe lever which is what i did. Reduces the throw by 50% at least and its OEM too.
Cheaper too.

The part that looks like rubber where the shift rod looks like it pushes against it is actually a metal joint that connects the shifter linkage rod to the shift rod on the transmission. These can get a little play in them and cause shifter play.

I like the BMW MZ3 shifter as a short shift

From that link, parts 2, 4, 5, 7, and 14 wear out causing the sloppy feel.

UUC (and others) offer a delrin version of part number 2, I highly recommend this.

5 is the shift lever itself which has a plastic ball that wears out, just get a z3 shifter to replace this, I chose the Z3 1.9L lever.

14 is a small sponge that wears out and causes trouble selecting gear, it is easiest to just buy 12 and replace the whole thing.

It would be really nice if someone made a stiffer version of 4 but I have never seen one.

Part 3 is the bitch clip, search on that before you try to take it off.

Lol bitch clip! I'm on the floor right now! - This never gets old to me...... haha

Okay for reals, don't buy an ebay short shift, I learned from experience not from what I was told on here.

REASON: After installing the ebay short shift, if I was in any gear, it would be so sloppy side to side that I could put it in first, and move the knob left/right 4 inches and it wouldn't always go into 5th because of that I shifted to 3rd at over 100mph, needless to say the M42 is in the backyard now. lol

Bitch clip, hahaha I hated that clip....

Spidertri is that diagram compatible with a 2000 setup?
hatchgrafix,spidertri,xxxjhonnyxxx,marv17 you will have your dream machine waiting purring and fuel on full tank and shifter throw so small gear changes will be instantaneous... when you pass the pearly gates

hmm, not sure. Go on realoem and look up your specific car, I'm sure it will be pretty similar.

i checked.. its the same all the way to 08/2000 if any one is unsure ..

and now i know that i have 2000 e36 .. heh i wasn't sure as some one diverted me to the e46 area of another forum. had me confused a little

The thing I have realized by based on what spidertri said .. is you cant actually just fix this by buying the replacements parts for affected areas because of the ball on the shifter itself .. well it might do something if you did not want to buy the selector because of the cost but i was planing on just fixing/band aid it for now.
so it does seem like there is no point just trying to replace the bushs because you will need to take out the 01 SHIFTING ARM to free 07 and 04.

I'm going to go against the grain here and recommend a specific eBay shifter. It's a knock-off of the old B&M racing shifter for BMWs and it's awesome. I've been running one in my E30 and ti for several years now. You can't beat the price and the throw is very short. It also gets rid of the plastic cup in the shifter carrier.

HMMM - You should take a video and show us how much play you have side to side while in gear. PRETTY sure I bought that exact one, and yes, I had very short shifts, but it was really bad side to side, and perfect forward and backward. Let us know, and if I installed it incorrectly, then I'm dumb, I doubt I did, but anythings possible 5 years ago. LOL

I wonder if I screwed mine up now, oh well if this SSK works, maybe I'll reconsider.

I was thinking more about this again and after reading the url below.. I was left with some questions

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/232933...burn-wa-us?p=3

What does he mean clutch arm, he replaced a bush there I would like to do so when I do the short shifter ugprade.. as I am prepared to do any thing to to alleviate my scratchy/grindy/forcefull gear changes, some times its like it wants to pop back out of gear too as it did not go in right in the first place.

on realoe I pulled up "clutch control" and cant work out where the bush is.. do you think he means "shifter arm" ??
and which of the hoses is the hose that you would replace with the braided steel aftermarket ones. -

I assumed
12 PRESSURE HOSE ASSY.CLUTCH 1 21521159714 $90.58

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...55&hg=21&fg=10

I had a dry run of taking apart the selector yesterday because I want to be sure I will be sucessfull.. and could not get past the gear knob lol ... no hair dryers about.. and brute force seems bad .. what is the up and down play all about anyway!! perhaps a sign of shifter rod bushings totally collapsed.

Just my opinion but that shifter is too long and not short enough shift. I take the MZ3 and cut off the top so it's top short then the bottom is so long it's 1/8" off my driveshaft where it hooks to the shift linkage. Now that is as short as you get It has almost zero side play and shifts are maybe 4" from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd is 1" over and 4" up. It's super tight and accurate.

john I will follow your lead its not worth doing if its not a noticeable improvement and results in still feeling loose..
but now I really have my work cut out for me..

1) replace tranny + mounts
2) replace clutch
3) replace flex disc
4) replace bush on clutch arm
5) overhall shifter with MZ3 one - you have to bend the shifter rod right?

1 + 2 really was not on my agenda....the car is more then driveable and Ive been told apart for the 1 control arm bush it will pass a mot fine.
But I feel like I fighting all these different areas at once ... clutch slipping symptoms, syncro/throw out bearing, sloppy selector.

It probably does have some side-to-side play, but I don't notice it while I'm driving. It didn't require any modifications at all on the E30. It may require bending the selector rod under the car, but mine was already bent from having the Z3 shifter in there previously. The shifts are very short, almost to the point of being notchy, but it does provide very positive engagement. I'm happy with and there really isn't a cheaper option.
