My 95 has a helicoil in the pan with a SAE bolt in from the PO and it leaks. I have another motor to drop in, but if I don't have to yet, perhaps I just swap oil pans. I have typically done it when the motor is out of the car. In the car swap, I'm thinking it entails: - Get renewal supplies in advance: Oil, Filter, Gasket, Motor mounts, good condition M42 oil pan, a few spare oil pan bolts, Oil collection pan, cold drinks
- Degrease underside of car in advance
- Prep the replacement pan (Clean, check for cracks, surfaces are true)
- Lift car on stands
- Drain oil
- Rig an engine support mount/bar
- Disconnect any sensors on the pan (Don't recall if there are any on this motor at the moment. I don't think so)
- Unbolt the pan
- Drop the swaybar & subframe
- Remove the pan, check for shavings and debris
- Remove and clean the surface areas
- Check oil pump since it's right there
- Install new gasket and pan
- Replace motor mounts since I'm there already (370K miles)
- Reattach subframe
- Refill and check for leaks
- Cool off and install x-brace
- Zoom, zoom test drive
Miss anything? I'll x-check the Bentley procedure if there is one. Seems basic, but I'm also documenting it as there was no procedure found in search for the next fellow. Thanks! Ya, I'm more concerned about pulling the pan at P & P with one of the chain lifts. As long as that is secure, dropping the subframe is no problem. I'd hate to have it drop on me. Not a cool thing... Anyway, it'll be a few weeks, prolly mid Sept before I get to it. Just doing my prep for it. __________________ 1998 318ti Sport - "Cali" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, Cali top 1998 318ti Sport - "Max" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, S52 1997 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior 1995 318ti Active - "Blanca" Alpineweib III/Schwartz leather interior Other Current Bimmers: 2006 530i / 2000 2.3L Z3 / 1997 1.9L Z3 / 1999 540it 1997 318ti Sport - "Huera" - RIP 1995 318ti Active - RIP 1995 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Sold 1994 325i Sedan - "Jade" - Sold 1991 318ic - "Bert" - Sold 1985 635csi sold 1984 533i "Max" Sold 1984 318i sold BMWCCA #160411 SUPPORT 318ti.org!
