Default Trip Meter Resets to Zero

I have a 1996 318ti with a 1995 M50B25TU. I swapped a 6-cylinder gauge cluster from a junk yard into it so that the tach rpm's would read correctly. Everything on the cluster works fine except that the trip meter resets to zero a few seconds after the car is turned off. The odometer always works fine, but the trip meter only works fine as long as the car is running, but will not hold the trip mileage after shutdown. The removed 318 cluster was a VDO and the 6-cyl replacement cluster is a Motometer, but I wouldn't think that would be the cause of the trip meter issue. Any advice on how to fix this is welcome.
