Umm, in an automatic, the transmission does not aid in parking your car. When you put the car in park, the parking brake mechanism engages the teeth on the output shaft of the transmission. So, the only thing doing work to hold your AT car is the thing that locks into the output shaft teeth. The remaining gears in your car do nothing.

LoL, I try to reverse into spots when I have time. Though if I'm running late for work or it's a busy parking lot, then I just drive into the spot.

if it is downhill, use reverse and ebreak. if it is uphill, use 1st gear and ebreak. but if you have a bad ebreak, you could just apply 1st gear. and if you it is below 0. dont even use ebreak or you cant put it down next morning... careful...

99 ti wont let you pull out the key if your car is not in gear...

I'm not sure how that applies to reversing into parking spots?

In any case those things can be bypassed. I can start my ti w/o engaging the clutch - of course, if the car is not in neutral at that point, it will stall.

sometimes I don't park in gear. . . . yes. . I know. . it goes against all I voted for *sob*. . .

BTW, anyone ever read in the manual how we're supposed to use the E brake lightly when coasting to a stop from time to time to keep it from rusting together?

park in gear wont hurt your car and actually is good for your car, what if you live in LA, you need park in gear or your car will rolling...lol
so another thing i do is when i park my car, i like to turn of my car, then put my key half way then put in reverse then ebreak then let of the break. when i start i like to put the key half way then put into neutral then start the car then let out the ebreak...
i mean different people like different way, i understand that, but sometimes you just need be careful about it... or your car will disappear... so...

Depends on where I'm parked. In a parking lot or level ground I usually put it in 1st and use the parking brake. On a hill, it's 1st gear + parking brake + wheels cranked left if facing uphill, reverse + parking brake + wheels cranked right if facing downhill.

always use the parking brake, always put in 2nd....if on a hill, position tires so that if it rolls its towards the curb....

I always put the car in first + ebrake - regardless of which direction i'm facing on a hill because first has the lowest (highest number value) ratio so it will resist car motion the most.

Putting it in reverse gives you slightly less protection.

Keep in mind that the engine always rotates in the same direction regardless of what gear the car is in.

It just looks nice to back into a parking spot... not many people get to see the front end of bmw cuz they are usually staring at our asses as we fly by them.
That sounds pretty awesome; never thought about it that way, But I always thought that the whole thing about the Ti's were their great asses!
