When you put the car in park, the parking brake mechanism engages the teeth on the output shaft of the transmission. So, the only thing doing work to hold your AT car is the thing that locks into the output shaft teeth. The remaining gears in your car do nothing. | | | 02-25-2007, 11:17 PM | #32 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Pittsburgh, PA Posts: 1,224 | Quote: Originally Posted by nusstroy i find reversing into parking spots annoying, probobly because i learned how to do it on a suburban, but it just takes forever for me(i guess my skillz aint no good) but i also like to reverse out of spots, reverse is all the fun in manual :-) | LoL, I try to reverse into spots when I have time. Though if I'm running late for work or it's a busy parking lot, then I just drive into the spot. | | | 02-25-2007, 11:58 PM | #33 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: Westfield, IN Posts: 1,335 | 1st+e-brake just a habit of doing it! __________________ Greg M42 Club member 186 WTB: HELLROT RED CLUB SPORT 95 ti sold but staying in the family. | | | 02-26-2007, 01:05 AM | #34 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Land of the Vikings Posts: 2,700 | Quote: Originally Posted by 2ndBimmer Just a curiosity... In any case those things can be bypassed. I can start my ti w/o engaging the clutch - of course, if the car is not in neutral at that point, it will stall. | | | 02-26-2007, 11:49 AM | #38 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Land of the Vikings Posts: 2,700 | Quote: Originally Posted by iqvkucuh 99 ti wont let you pull out the key if your car is not in gear... | ive never parked in gear, and my keys are in my pocket right now __________________ Vin Number decode and Retrofit Pdfs Available Free ! In a parking lot or level ground I usually put it in 1st and use the parking brake. On a hill, it's 1st gear + parking brake + wheels cranked left if facing uphill, reverse + parking brake + wheels cranked right if facing downhill. Putting it in reverse gives you slightly less protection. Keep in mind that the engine always rotates in the same direction regardless of what gear the car is in. | | | 03-26-2008, 08:43 AM | #44 | Member Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Northern California Posts: 85 | Quote: Originally Posted by upstatenybimmer I either park in 1st w/ the E brake or reverse with the E brake (depending on which way i came in). It just looks nice to back into a parking spot... not many people get to see the front end of bmw cuz they are usually staring at our asses as we fly by them. | That sounds pretty awesome; never thought about it that way, But I always thought that the whole thing about the Ti's were their great asses! | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
