Default Strange Vibration!! Camshaft Issue??

I have a '97 318ti with just over 90k miles. For the last couple of weeks, a strange slight vibration has been occurring at just under 3,000 RPM that sounds like it is coming from the engine compartment. This has been a consistent issue. Outside this item, the car seems to be running fine.

I ran my fault code reader and the only fault that appeared was the "Camshaft Position Sensor" Are the two related? If so, is this serious issue?? If not, any idea what might be causing the vibration? Any advice would be appreciated -- Thanks for the help!!

doubt they're related. i would reset the faults and see if the camshaft position sensor error comes back. if so, i would replace it.

does this slight vibration also occur if you're not moving? if so, have someone else sit in the car and rev it to just under 3k while you're observe under the hood.

I suggest looking under the hood whilst reving the engine. I have just had a problem with my DISA unit which is on the side of the intake manifold. (rattling noise)

Just put your hand on this and rev the engine - if it rattles - the diaphram is broken off and it needs to be replaced. If it is noisy refer to a note I posted under "Rattling Noise from the DISA/Intake Manifold"

Hope this helps - could be something else completely...

i have been noticing the same thing in my 99ti M sport with 90k. it seems to happen when driving, from between 2600-2800 rpms. a weird vibration and vibration like sound. i'm assuming it something in the differential. so i'm gonna take it in and have them drain and fill it and then see how it is.

Thanks for the things to check. OK, so I checked if the vibration occurs while the car is out of gear, and it does. However, when I had someone take the engine up to 3,000 RPM while I was checking the engine compartment, I barley noticed any thing out of the ordinary -- but while sitting in the drivers seat, the vibration is very noticeable. It almost seems as something is lose such as the timing chain?? Any other thoughts? Thanks again for the help!

I second harmonics in the exhaust. My 95 has a harmonic that occurs in the exhaust at the RPM you describe.
