Default Brake Light Switch

Quick question... I replaced my brake light switch last year. I noticed a couple months later the lights weren't lighting up again. I got up under the dash and pulled the red slide out, pressed on the brakes and they worked again. This week I noticed cars coming close to my bumper again and pulled over to check it again. Lights weren't lighting up again. Got home and pulled the red slide out again and the brake lights are working again. It seems the red slide is pretty sensitive and if it slips back the connection is lost and therefore no brake lights. The question is did I install it incorrectly last year and there's something I should have clipped into place to hold the red slide in position? Or did I possibly just get a defective switch?

Get this one figured out?

I replaced this switch earlier this summer on the M3. I think I had to rip off the little red collar for the switch to work.
