I picked up a ZF transmission and driveshaft out of another ti recently to swap my own car. After some debate I just decided to rob the rear half of the driveshaft I bought and splice it onto the front end of mine. However we noticed on doing this that it was slightly thicker, and a hair longer then my stock 1998 manual transmission driveshaft. Any explanations as to why this may be? As best as I can tell this will still work just fine. | | | 05-13-2016, 02:03 PM | #2 | Member Join Date: Sep 2015 Location: MD Posts: 35 | I am not sure why it would be slightly longer however, afaik, the two halves of the driveshaft were balanced together as as a single unit. matching different halves with each other might produce an unbalanced driveline, even if the white dots on each of the halves are in alignment. | | | 05-14-2016, 09:56 AM | #3 | Member Join Date: Aug 2015 Location: Arizona Posts: 99 | Quote: Originally Posted by two30grain I am not sure why it would be slightly longer however, afaik, the two halves of the driveshaft were balanced together as as a single unit. matching different halves with each other might produce an unbalanced driveline, even if the white dots on each of the halves are in alignment. | Yup, I had accounted for that and was going to take it to a driveshaft shop to get it balanced. As it turns out it was the back half of a 325i drive shaft though so I decided against using it. It did come out of an m52 swapped ti, so I know it works in that application. Thanks though! | | | 06-20-2016, 05:00 PM | #4 | Junior Member Join Date: Mar 2016 Location: Latvia Posts: 6 | ZF driveshafts comes with ZF gearbox only.
