Default Installing an upgraded rear sway bar

Tools Needed:

1. Lift, or Jack and Jack stands
2. Basic metric socket set, I used the one in my autox trailer
3. Pliers, I used channel locks and slip joint pliers.
4. Slotted screwdriver
5. Work gloves

Step 1:

A) Remove the spare tire

This is quite simple in these cars as you just follow the instructions located on the board you lift up to gain access to the spare tire compartment.

Step 2:

A)Put car on lift or on level ground and on jack stands

Step 3:

A) remove the rear sway bar using a 13mm socket/wratchet and 13mm wrench. There are 6 bolts in total holding them in place. NOTE: The lower sway bar mounts are wearable items, if they appear to be worn now would be the time to replace them.

B) Use the slotted screwdriver to remove the upper mounting tabs as they will most likely be stuck to the bushing.

C) Remove the sway bar and set on floor.

Its quite a difference as compared to stock.

Step 4:

A) Put on new sway bar mount bushings, these come impregnated with grease so that they will not squeak. As well they come with all necessary mounting hardware.

B) This can be a bit of a trial in patience, but basically you need to put the top edge of the sway bar mounting tab top side in first and use the channel locks to put pressure down so the stud will go thru the hole in the mount, install nut. Repeat this procedure for the opposite side.

C) Reinstall the lower sway bar links just as they came off making sure to remember to install the brake cable tabs as well.

D) Choice to make, install on soft or stiff setting. As this is my Autox car I chose to go on the soft setting first as it was already an upgrade over stock and see how I liked it. I am still a bit worried it may cause some understeer issues so I will have to report back about how it went before making a decision to go full stiff in the rear.

D) Make sure everything is tight, check and recheck!

E) Should come out looking like this:

Step 5:

A) Lower car to the ground

B) Reinstall the spare tire

Step 6:

A) Go drive and enjoy your newly tightened up suspension.

As a precautionary measure it is a good idea to reinforce the rear sway bar mounting tabs. Turner and AKG make reinforcement kits that are relatively inexpensive. On the tis a rear sway bar larger than the stock sport bar (16mm) has the potential to break the tabs. This problem occurs on E30s and Z3s as well.
