I'm sure it was a tough call to make but probably the right one.Good luck!

Best of luck. These issues can be damning and cause you to drink more beer, give up, or pull your hair out. I know how you feel. I had this annoying as hell chassis noise on mine. I threw in the towel and had my buddy who is a fulltime euro mechanic use it for a week with sound isolating mics placed in different places on the car. He finally found it and it was pretty stupid. But it would have taken me forever to find and drove me to insanity. Sometimes you just have to call it quits depending on the situation.

Car was towed to shop.
So far the mechanic says it was 3 qts low on oil.
Kicking myself in the butt. I can't believe it was low.
I hardly drove it after changing the oil and replacing the oil filter housing bushing.

Doubt that is causing my idle problem.
The car has multiple problems.

Better sitting in someone else's garage than mine.

I wonder if you might have some valve train issues causing the idling issues. Admittedly yes it's a long shot ruled out by a leak down test but with what you said about the oil I wonder. Either way I hope it's not the case though.

You got it!
Tensioner making noise.
Mechanic didn't like the plugs I used.
Car was running on 2 cylinders.
Needs plug wires.

Then list goes on and on.
I told the mechanic I plan on keeping this car.
I want it to be a reliable daily driver. It's not like I want it fixed good enough to sell.

LCAB, subframe bushings, RTABS. Motor mounts. Tranny mounts.
I suspect it's going to be somewhere between 2K and 3K.
May need to start a gofundme campaign.

Oh man. Well I'm glad you figured it out. Two cylinders would run bad. The bushings you mentioned some are very easy like the transmission ones. The motor mounts are easy if you go to Harbor freight and buy their motor support bar or have access to a engine lift of some type. You can do it with a floor jack too if your careful. The rtabs and lcabs are easy too if you get the 2wd 4wd ball joint service kit at Harbor freight. It looks like a big c clamp with a bunch of different cups and pushers. You'll save money even buying the tools and also have those if you need them ever again.

I'm having the mechanic sort everything out.
Working on the car is no longer fun.
He's going to replace plugs, mounts, etc.
Says the fan belt wasn't installed right. Could be me.
After a few weeks I'll go back and have suspension bushings replaced.

Others have told me to sell it and by an M3.

I hear you man. That's how it got to be for me and audis. Now I totally despise them. An m3 would be a fun car. My next would be the m5 with the v10 and sequential shift or a e46 m3 both badass. Actually who am I kidding there's quite a few I'd pick.

Picking up my car tonight.
Low oil.
Alternator not installed properly. I missed the bottom bolt.
Plugs and wires.
Pulley.
Belt.
We'll see.
I can't believe how I screwed this thing up.

Nice! Hope it hasn't totally killed your wallet but I bet it will feel good to have it back again.

Probably around $600 this time. I'm fixing it up in stages.
Part of me wants to sell it now that I know it's running and I don't feel like I"m abandoning it and they other part want to keep it. I love driving it.
Next ti will be OBD-II and maybe a 99 Sport.

Hear you on that. They really are that much fun to drive. I've got to say I might be a little worried for BMWs future. I took a test drive in a 2015 3 series earlier this week for giggles and I kinda wasnt impressed. It seemed pretty mundane granted it wasn't a coupe or m but still. Our tis were a base economy model and are really fun if you keep the revs high. Sigh.. People call me crazy for having as many BMWs as I have. My parents give me crap about trading them all in for a brand new one and I'm like No!
