I'd just stick with the interval you have now, I don't think I'd want to go 10k between oil changes on a car that old

Mobil1 10w30. I live in the Panhandle of Florida, and the temperatures range from the 20s on a really cold winter day to 100+ on hot hot summer days. If anybody has a suggestion for anything better let me know! haha.

5W/40 is best all around for your temperature. 5w is thin enough for cold start and normal days. 40W is good for high temps. Unless you sit in bumper to bumper traffic in hot weather with the A/C running this is a good choice.
BTW: 5W/40 is not a diesel only oil.

Mobil One -OR- Castrol Syntec

Shell Rotella T6 as last choice.

So I live in San Diego. Back in the day when I had a 318is and M3 I used 10W30 Full Synthetic. Now I'm back in the BMW scene with a 318ti. The guy at the auto store recommend 5W30, I made a post on another BMW forum and they were telling me differently. Before I put in the 5W30 Full Synthetic, should I go with another weight instead? My car has around 204,000 miles.

I live in Florida, and I use the high mileage Mobil1 10w30 full synthetic without any problems. Been thinking about switching up though. I've heard a lot of things about different weights.

I used to use 0W-40 Mobile 1 Full Syn on my C55 AMG, then I switch to 5W-40 Shell Rotella T6. So if you are recommending that I could use 0W-40 in the 318ti, then it should be perfectly fine for me to use 5W-40 Rotella as well?

I would think so. When you go to the mobil 1 site and put in your car it comes back with 0W-40 so I think that would be close enough for me.

Ran seafoam through my oil about 50 miles before my oil change. Used 0w40 this time around. Think the car is liking it better.

I followed others from this site and went with Mobil 1 0W40 and have been happy with it. I just found out that I'm running an M42 head on an M44 block which from what I understand, has increased its compression. Would I be better served with a heavier weight oil, thinner weight, or does it make any difference?

Compression doesn't really have much to do with what weight oil you use. It would if you're engine is running like a 2 stroke I guess. I have the best luck with 10w-30, only Mobil1 of course. It tends to use 5w-30, around 1/2-3/4 of a quart over the course of 5000 miles, probably because of the heat here. I would suggest 0w-40 if you live in somewhere that stays very cool/cold year round. If not, try 5w-30 or 10w-30. Personally, I think 0w is too light. The tolerances in this engine aren't as tight as newer stuff.

Thanks for the info UberWagen. The 0w if very light and I do tend to burn/use a little more because of it. I live in the California hills so I get a wide range of temp (20-100), so maybe I'll try some 5w-30 this winter and see how it goes.

Mobil 1 10-40 year around...buy it at Walmart in 5 quart containers which is the exact amount for an oil and filter change. I don't run over 5k miles between changes.

I just did a change with Mobil1 0W-40. The "European car formula" oil that most BMW guys use.

I've been thinking that since this is an older car that came filled with conventional, I may just go back to a conventional oil. I do short OCI's and the temperature in NJ and St. Louis vary a lot. Plus, I'm all about saving a couple bucks anywhere.
