Camshaft Position Sensor Just replaced this sensor in my daughter's car and thought I should share observations. Car is a 96 318ti (M44 engine). On a couple of instances this summer it threw a check engine light that went away after a few restarts. I scanned the car before the CEL went off and it indicated camshaft sensor issue (P0340) and a couple of seemingly associated random cylinder misfire codes. Since problem went away and didn't re-occur, I choose not to do anything, particularly since she isn't real timely about reimbursing dad for parts. During the deep freeze we had in Ohio a couple weeks ago, car would not start when temp dropped to below 0 F. I decided to replace the camshaft position sensor, mostly based on things I read about failures of the sensor when cold. Fixed the no start problem, but ambient temperatures were also around 25 F by the time I had the part in hand, so wasn't completely convinced. Last night got down to -7 F and car started fine. Might very well be some truth to sensors prone to fail when very cold. |
