Default M44 crankcase ventilation

So when i bought my compact the pipe wasnt connected to the piece that sticks out of the rocker cover and had a bolt or something stuck into the pipe and tape wrapped around it.

The car ran fine and never overheated although the idle was a slight bit lumpy but nothing major.

So today i went out and started messing with it and pulled the metal piece out of the end of the pipe and started the car, and the idle was really rough and the car cut out so i put the metal bolt thingy back on the pipe and it idled fine again.

What i want to know is, will not having the pipe connected harm the engine or any other componants? Or is it safe to leave it the way it is?

What do you mean, the metal you just removed was plug for the pipe? Seems, when you removed the plugged metal then you open the vacuum. I think it start the rough idle because there's a vacuum leak.
