Are the oil they sell at the dealer any good? I plan on buying 15w-40 for the S52. When i went to the dealer i noticed they had that oil weight there. It didn't look like it had a brand. They had some other type of liquid next to it and that one was labeled Castrol. I usually always bought full synthetic castrol from auto zone or pep boys. I think the quart just said bmw or sometype of label. IIRC, the bottle was gray with green letters? When i asked, they said Castrol made their oil. My question regardless, is their oil any good? Should i buy oil from there? I know its the same "name/company" but should i just go buy Castrol (black bottle) from a parts store, or get the Castrol (gray bottle) from the dealer? Or is it exactly the same thing? TIA (thanks in advance) | | | 05-18-2008, 12:17 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: Eugene Oregon Posts: 6,182 | i would bet its the same thing. or VERY alike and not a big deal. go with the cheaper of the two castrol which is prolly from and auto store __________________ -Josh Sold-1995 318ti, Club Sport, Hellrot Sold-1996 318ti, Active Model, Boston Green Current- 1995 318ti, sport model, schwartz | | | 05-18-2008, 12:21 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2005 Location: çî†ÿ øf åNgëL§, CA Posts: 5,314 | To my surprise the dealer is selling at $6 a quart. I think the last time i paid for a quart at pep boys was either 5.49 or 6.49. I dont remember. Who actually buys their oil from the dealer? | | | 05-18-2008, 01:55 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | not me, I buy a 5-quart jug of Mobil 1 from Wal-Mart, can't remember how much it costs though | | | 05-18-2008, 09:29 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Land of the Vikings Posts: 2,700 | BMW gets Castrol to make them special blends, mostly to help with the diesel particulate EU4 norm polution control. The new bmw oil is a castrol edge sport that covers the particulate brakdown in the oil. In anycase, your s52 (Us or Euro spec?) would run best on 10-60 to avoild vanos issues if its the base M52 with sport cams and crank, then a 10-50 / 10-40 would be good depending on temp. Do ou run FI on it Hugo? if so 15 might be too thick on start up, until its warmed you may suffer from oil starvation on the cams and bearings.. not good __________________ Vin Number decode and Retrofit Pdfs Available Free ! What would be the best weight? I always used 10-40 on my the M44. The m3 guys are saying go with 15-40 for the summer. And i think its 5-30 for the winter. | | | 05-18-2008, 09:45 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Land of the Vikings Posts: 2,700 | im not sure how hot it gets in cali, not had the plesure yet but 15w isnt too thick if its hot-hot in the morning i do a 0-40 winter with -5 to +5 deg C in the mornin and od a 5-50 in the summer with peak temps of 25 - 30 deg C __________________ Vin Number decode and Retrofit Pdfs Available Free ! Just make sure you're not paying too much, there are plenty of good brands out there. Whatever you do, it's best to just pick one and stick with it. The only thing I'd personally take into account is that the BMW synthetic is only a semi-synth blend. __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 05-18-2008, 10:28 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Land of the Vikings Posts: 2,700 | prices from BMW are too high, and is exactly the same as Castrol Edge sport. Besides, this is mostly only for the new diesels that run on 0 30 and shi* Ant full synt, valvoline, royal purple :P or STP at 15w 40 would do you fine. BUT get an orig. oil filter __________________ Vin Number decode and Retrofit Pdfs Available Free ! I heard for sure not to get spark plugs from the dealer. LoL. What would be a good candidate for spark plugs for the s52? | | | 05-18-2008, 11:24 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Land of the Vikings Posts: 2,700 | what does the handbook say dude ? id stick with the numbers listed on those for sure __________________ Vin Number decode and Retrofit Pdfs Available Free !
