Default air conditioning re-build..help...please...

I just bought my daughter a 1995 318ti. The a/c system is not working. I took the car to a shop and they advised that a part is missing under the hood. Quoted a large sum to repair and test the a/c. They did not know if the a/c would work after they replaced part. They did not advise as to what part is missing. My question is: is there a site or page or something that shows all of the a/c components for the ti? I would like to tackle this repair myself. But i do not know where to start. The compressor is in place, the condensor appears to be ok, I think the part that is missing is the dryer thing. I am a pretty good mechanic when it comes to all the other systems. I have built several american made car engines and have doen repairs to many domestic vehicles. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all,
Dad on a tight budget.
