Default need tips and tricks

My name is Tony and l am new here. last year I bought a 1998 318ti DINAN for $1500 and was told it needed a starter, water pump and a thermostat assembly. the car had been down for about a year at that point.so I replaced all of the above but was having over heating issues. so l took it to a BMW mechanic who informed me "it sucks to be you"!!!!!!!! seems it has a blown head gasket wich he quoted me $2800 to repair. sounds a little steep to me. so I've decided to take on the task myself. any tips would be appreciated as this is my first BMW. MOSTLY where will l find the best prices on gasket set and repair manual. thanks.

Not sure what level of mechanical experience you have, but a 1.9 head gasket is not the first repair one should tackle...
