Default Shocks and Struts

What is the difference between shocks and struts? I know I need to change something, especially in the right rear, whenever I hit a bump I hear a noise like something is loose. Also, do the front shocks/struts dictate steering, my car has been veering to the left, alignment is needed i assume.

struts are in the front, and shocks are in the rear
and if its pulling on either side you should definatelly have it checked
