Newer 318ti owner

If I start the car and go to pull away, the transmission won't shift until it gets to 3500-4000 rpm. If I drop it into 3rd, during or before, it'll shift as normal. Or... if I let the car sit and warm up for 5-10 minutes, I can pull away as normal, no high revs or shifting into 3rd then back to drive. Is this normal for a 318ti?
