I found a low mileage m44 for cheap ($500). Do any companies make aftermarket internals for the m44? Like rods and pistons? I'm thinking about building a low compression (8.5:1) m44 and running a ton of boost on it. I know a lot of BMW guys use Arrow rods, but they don't have them for the m44. Any ideas? __________________ '99 Dinan M3 | | | 02-06-2006, 10:03 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: England, UK Posts: 1,288 | i'd imagine you got get customs from one of the top brands if you contacted them.... __________________ 1995 BMW 316i Cosmos Black Mods: • Magnex Cat-Back Exhaust • Smoked Corner Lights + Repeators • M3 17" Wheels • De-Baffled Air Box • AC HandBrake Handle and Gear Knob • DEPO Euro Epsiloids + Predator Chronium Rings • Chrome Interior bits •IE Poly-Urethane RSFMs • Kenwood Power Series Audio • Powder Coated e36 325 Front Callipers • Sports Seats | | | 02-06-2006, 10:47 PM | #3 | TRETEN IRGENDEINES ESELS Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: Rhode Island Posts: 3,687 | Quote: Originally Posted by stormos i'd imagine you got get customs from one of the top brands if you contacted them.... | Customs might be on the expensive side, but you might not have any choice in the matter. __________________ 98 Avus Blue 318 ti Active clear outs all around, stealth turning signals, blue led interior lights, 35% tinted windows,K&N air filter, 12" Kenwood Sub, MTX Thunder Amp,Alpine cd changer, Leatherz Armrest,ACS Pedals/Handbrake/FloorMats & Vitesse Tuning Carbon Fiber B-Pillars/CF Spark Plug Cover, New 16" MSW Typer 14 Rims on Goodyear Triple Treds www.myspace.com/avusblueti | | | 02-06-2006, 10:48 PM | #4 | Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: Canada Posts: 42 | JE Pistons has a set for the M44, and I know I saw a custom set for a low compression m44 made by JE on ebay a couple months ago. http://www.racetep.com/jeimport.html Cris | | | 02-07-2006, 12:07 AM | #5 | Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: Canada Posts: 42 | One of my technicians at work has used Ross Pistons a couple times in the past, and swears by them. They dont list anything for BMW but it might be worth a shot, he says they will make pretty much anything, and the prices were fair too. http://www.rosspistons.com/index.php | | | 02-07-2006, 12:08 AM | #6 | doesn't care about you. Posts: 3,156 | Just determine the dimensions you want/need and call all the regular guys. You may end up with Ford Pinto race rods, but all you care about is the final outcome... Another trick is to get 'close' with the rod big ends and use +/- 0.xxx bearings to make stuff fit right. There is a machine shop I used to use for my big-block Chrysler work called Trakim (or Tracim, or Trakem somrthing like that) Machine in Hartford area CT. This guy was able to build whatever you wanted. (not sure if he's even still around) I remember bringing in a 440 for an over-bore and cam bearings and he was figuting how to make the (now) 453-incher into a 513-inch motor! He mixed all makes of parts... (and he was able to make crank shafts from scratch if needed) Pretty serious shop! | | | 02-07-2006, 11:50 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2004 Location: Port St. Johns, Florida Posts: 2,242 | what about OE M42 rods? Cheaper than racing parts, and forged so they should be stronger than the M44 parts. | | | 02-08-2006, 01:29 AM | #9 | Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Bouncing off the rev limiter in CT! How many people are interested in low compression pistons and forged rods for a high boost engine. The reason I ask is because I have been in contact with Carillo connecting rods and Im going to be contacing JE and Wiseco (Maybe others if any of your prefer another brand) on getting custom pistons and rods made for the 318ti Project Engine that will be running a more race oriented version of our supercharger system that is currently in development. If there is a sizable amount of interest in this we might look at doing a production run of these. We are still laying up the specs to send in for the connecting rods an the pistons so lets hear all of your input! Thanks guys! I plan on rebuilding my current motor within the next 12 months. If you can gather all the pieces, I would be happy to purchase some sort of kit from you. I'd like to stay between 8.5-9:1 compression and run upto 20psi boost. I would also be interested in stand alone engine management at that point, if necessary. __________________ '99 Dinan M3 | | | 02-25-2006, 01:36 AM | #12 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | i'd be interested to hear what kind of costs we'd be looking at. i'm thinking i might build a track car, but not sure what form it'll take. __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 02-25-2006, 01:09 PM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2006 Posts: 102 | I can tell this would definately be a niche thing but that doesnt really bother us and I think it would allow us to offer a full supercharged engine package. Allowing the person to have basically the major components for developing a high horsepower M44, obviously a matched cam some headwork and other small things would need to be done but this would get alot of the major components out of the way. First off I would like to decide with all of you what you think would be a good common ratio, from my stand point I would like to go to 8.5:1 because it adds a margin of safety or expandability however you want to look at it but Im open to all of your input. Secondly I would like to know if you would want to do some sort of stroker kit with this. Im open to all ideas lets here them and get this rolling as well! Thanks for letting us help guys!
