Damage was limited to the underside of the head and top of the number 2 piston. Normally, if you're going quickly or don't stop soon enough, the problem destroys the engine. I'd consider a new valve, coz a secondhand one may well be fatigued and break up like ours did. Sorry performanceisland but IMHO a S/H part where the DISA valve goes is a touch dodgy in my book. | | | 03-23-2010, 08:20 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2009 Location: usa Posts: 378 | Quote: Originally Posted by duffsparky The actuator pin in the DISA valve of our 2001 e46 318i broke apart, without any noticeable warning, last summer and almost wrecked the engine; luckily the wife was going slow and stopped almost straight away. And at a brand new price compared to what this guy got it from its not even a thought in my mind. | | | 03-23-2010, 11:03 PM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Mar 2010 Location: Hampshire UK Posts: 9 | performanceisland I wasn't trying to rain on your parade just trying to help Labphoto. The drawing 00015425 provided by Labphoto is for an e36/5 318ti (Compact in Europe) with an M44 engine. The M44 engine uses the same DISA valve as our 2001 e46 318i namely part number 11 61 1 438 404. The problem with this part was apparently known to BMW and I believe was the subject of a product recall that never happened. Therefore, a 48K mile valve may just as easily fail as ours did, that is unless US miles are significantly shorter than UK ones! | | | 03-24-2010, 02:02 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2009 Location: usa Posts: 378 | Quote: Originally Posted by duffsparky performanceisland I wasn't trying to rain on your parade just trying to help Labphoto.
