You can get reman axles from most auto parts stores rather than buying high mileage used stuff.

Most auto parts stores label their aftermarket non-OEM axles as "remanufactured" and they suck! Bluebimma's been through a few of them and slow_ti has exploded several. Stick to Genuine BMW, I bought used e30 halfshafts and rebuilt them. It's a messy job, but it's worth it. IIRC the rebuild kits were only 27 bucks at pelicanparts.
