I've been working with the local dealership to get more information on the 135i. I'm thinking about trading in the m3 for one. Here is what he has to say:

Hey Dusten!

I know, that 1-Series is going to be awesome! I'm really excited about it as well. No concrete dates on the when we are going to see them here in the states unfortunately. They are going to be 2009 models, so we're thinking at least 8-12 months before we can get them. I'm going to a big BMW event in Chicago this August and they are going to have the 1-Series there, so hopefully after that I will know more. They haven't released pricing yet either, it's still being figured out. I'll definitely be in touch and I would love to help your coworkers out as well, so feel free to send me their email addresses. And as I get updates I will pass them along to the three of you. Until then, enjoy your M3 and I'll talk to you soon!

BMW NA will never bring a 4 banger to the US again.
But no hatch!
I don't recall reading anything about the transmission.
I'd like to have I-drive deleted.

rear end isnt as bad as i expected, but the front i dunno...headlights are a little "bubbly"... i was hoping for a hatch 135i so i dunno if ill be able to get into a sedan or not...

Honestly I didn't care for the hatch when I was in Europe. It looks like a Mazda 3 and doesn't have any features that really stand out. The hatch WOULD be much more functional though...

I want to see a crash video of a Smart versus an Escalade. I feel like I'm driving a mini-car when I drive the 318ti where I live. Everyone has huge SUVs, I can't imagine how awful that would be. SUVs wouldn't even see you in their mirrors!
