I have good news for you... you don't need to replace the timing belt on your car. It doesn't have one. Look for links to the bentley e36 service manual... Its a huge pdf file which contains all the info you need to replace the head gasket. Or you can buy one for around $80. It takes special tools to get the valve timing right. It involves locking the cams in place, locking the flywheel in place and using a rigid chain tensioner. When you get to this point, look me up and I'll let you borrow my set for a week to get this done. One more thing... some late 95 cars use the 1996+ oil filter. It's easy to see the difference as the 96+ version has a plastic cap on it. Good luck, and keep reading here. There's lot's of great info and great people. | | | 01-22-2011, 09:23 PM | #18 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2007 Location: Gulfport, Florida Posts: 3,208 | Welcome to the board. I hope the head did not leak any water in a cylinder and then it sat for three years. If it did you might have some cylinder wall and ring damage. Anyways I was just thinking about worst case issues with the car sitting for so long. Hopefully the head was pulled three years ago and it sat dry. Most likely it didn't since he drove it for so long, it was most likely dry, but if it got refilled with water then there could be issues... Anyways welcome and best of luck with your project. I'm sure we can help you no matter what is wrong with it, there are a lot of knowledgable people on here. Any pictures of the car? This is Cossette my 2000 Subaru Impreza RS Subie-9894 by CrashCo. Photo, on Flickr she has been a nightmare on her own you can read that here: http://www.rs25.com/forums/f145/t169...nightmare.html But now that she is stableish I just started working on the 318ti since it was set on the back burner once I got my rs, I figured I would say HI again, and see if there was any locals that would be interested in assisting me on these repairs, I'm in Lake County, IL.
