BMW has pretty much maxed out the M42/M44 engines already so putting intake exhaust and a chip will only get moderate gains. I know from personal experience. 135 plus BHP is pretty damn decent for a 1.8/1.9 L engine and this all started back in 1991. What other car company could make those claims back then. The problem is that the engine is just too small for a 2900 lb car plain and simple. More serious mods are neccessary to make real power like a DASC or a custom turbo kit etc.

sorry to bring up a dead post...
but an intake on an M44 really does nothing except sound cool eh? I was going to order one in the next few days, but now im wondering if i should just save my money and put it towards suspension..

so well im in here, what kind of gains would a intake/CB exhaust/chip get me? other than sounding pretty bad ass

You can achieve all the benefits of a CAI for nearly free with either the Fogg modification or the M42/M44 dual intake mod. They are both written up in the Notebook section of the forum. Either one will make a little more noise and get a stock engine as much air as it will ever need.

Fog the air box, and use a K&N replacement element for best results...

I was actually looking into doing that for my car...figure the air cleaner element on a ti box is actually larger than a stock M5x box. I have plenty of other things to spend $400 on. If I want it to look great, maybe I'll paint it orange or something.

k thanks guys

just so i don't have to start another topic, for those who have done the fogged mod, i know the new hose has to run down along side the rad, how did you attach it so its not floating around? i can't quite understand where the opening goes either.

i was in there today and ripped out the sound deadener and couldn't quite figure out where you would run the new hose and to which location... im more visual than anything, so id love if someone could get a couple pictures (the ones in the tutorial really doesn't show or explain much).. id really appreciate it.

Before I put a CAI on my car I removed the intake snorkel from the front of the airbox and I simply drilled the bottom and left side of the air box with a hole saw and it did make a slight difference. More of a differnce than the CAI ever did.
