while working on the interior of my car to replace some other things, i noticed rust starting on the lower lip of the hatch (lowest part where the latch is). maybe i could post a pic at some later point. the paint is starting to bubble from the rust underneath. now i really hate this damn salt-dumping, cold, snowy state (i'll spare you from my other choice words for it)! any suggestions to (hopefully) save it? i'd really rather not have to replace the whole damn hatch  __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles

on my roof i have a a small chip in the paint that looks a bit rusty.
is this the paint that has gone rusty or the chasis???
what should i do?? it is small like this big | |

cal-ti; sand that mother down. there's some stuff (i'll have to ask a friend) that works very well in curbing oxidation, you'll want to use some of that as well. if it's on the lower lip, you can probably use rattle-cans to cover it up. remember primer.

you're gonna want to get rid of the oxidation underneath, otherwise it'll just keep spreading (even with the paint covering it). 3M makes a pen-like sanding tool for small areas.

i'll be inside the back of my car (what's left of it) tonight so i'll work on pulling off the interior hatch trim to take a look. i also found (joy joy!) a pool of water underneath my rear seat when i had it out (while replacing some other parts and looking for the source of my fuel smell) so i pulled damn near everything out of the rear interior to find the source (my guess at this point is the cali top, yey me!). my weight distribution is getting seriously thrown off now with the spare out (to get at the diff easier when i discovered the passenger side half shaft had "popped" out of the diff slightly) and all the interior out. but luckily it appears the fuel line couplings (viewable underneath the access points underneath the rear seat) appear to be rusting along nicely (driver's side is the likely culprit of the smell as it became fairly pungent when i removed that access cover)! anyone every had to replace any fuel lines there? looks joyously fun to gain access to (note heavy use of sarcasm). thanks for the suggestion aceyx, i'll be investigating and hopefully can get a pic or two. anyone need pics of the rear with everything removed?  __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles

ok, after some good yanking to get the largest piece of the hatch trim off, i'm now faced with the two side pieces. i'd rather not break any of the tabs, but i'm not sure how they release. anyone have any pointers? i'm referring to #5 and #7 on the attached diagram.
there IS rust on the inner seam (can only be seen after removing trim piece #1). it appears there has been runoff from ... drum roll ... the trunk lid grip (piece that sits above the license plate which holds the lights for the plate). it was the only place i found any evidence of runoff on the inside of the hatch. i have not yet removed this piece as it holds the locking mechanism and it was getting late.
a couple of suggestions:
1) do NOT use metal screws to hold your license plate (at least not any that will rust when exposed to the elements).
2) keep an eye on the trailing lip/edge of your hatch, keep it flushed out if you're in a state that uses salt during the winter and keep it waxed. if you're worried, pull the trim piece off and check inside.
