thats normal...i always get up to about 3k rpms then hit the manual button so its not revving its self out when its cold. When I get up to speed I switch it back.

My car does the same thing with only 39k on it. I thought there may be a problem with the tranny but there are no leaks anywhere on the car so I've been wondering about it.

The story I've always heard is that it's programmed that way to reduce emissions. The higher engine RPM heats up the catalytic converter faster, which is required for it to work properly (being hot).

actually they did this with a few things
the trannies built by ZF didn't have stickers and they told BMW that it wasn't lifetime oil. BMW changed this im not sure if it was to make money or not though, thats just a guess.
they also did this with brake fluid.
my dad has a brochure from the late 70's from BMW saying to do an annual brake flush.
in the late 80's BMW put out a secret letter to all BMW dealers saying hat they were not selling enough brake parts and they increased the brake flush to 2 years.
also, on the new engines they are saying change the oil every 5,000 miles instead of 3,000 miles, and i cant even count how many sludged engines we have in the back of my dads shop because of this.

had my slushbox fluid changed 40k ago, not sure if it made a difference but it still works

Because when the oil drains, the solinoids jam and dont move smoothly again.

This i wasn´t aware of..

I think it had more to do with the DOT rating of the fluid, than to shorten the life expectancy of the calipers..

I think this is also down to the type of oil used. I have a new Castrol Oil which is now double the regular oil lifetime spec

or 24000 kms, known as LL04 which is the new version of the LL01 type oil, specially designed for BMW N engines.

I bet your dad does have a load of engines there, but thats probably because they tried to save a few pennies in the wrong way.

A good specialist is in some cases better than Dealership, because the question the rules.

But ther rules are there for a reason

The Edge range is also compattible with the LL01 / 04 range

and has specs for the New M5 e60

which clearly state 15000 miles / 24000 kms range

Okay it's settled I'm leaving it alone! Thanks Mallard for your help once again. It's just hard for me not to replace the tranny fluid after replacing everything else.

And, if anybody wants to change the fliud in their tranny they should just do it - especially if its "lifetime" seems to be up.

of course ,i do know more than most 14 year olds (not trying to show off), ive just been taught how to work on BMWs since i was about 5.
