Exclamation $700 WTF!?!

So the hood of my ti has been severely "sun burnt" and ive been wanting to get it fixed for a while now. The clear coat is slowly chipping/flaking off the hood as well as the side view mirrors. It looks awful. The exposed paint still appears to be fine but what the hell do i know? I finally went to the body shop today to get an estimate for repainting it and the guy told me it would cost about 700 bucks . He said they would have to strip it down to the metal and completely redo it. Any suggestions on what i should do? Im not really willing to spend that much just to get the hood fixed and was hoping there was some way to do it myself.

If you look closely you can see it in this picture. I will get some better ones when i get home

700 seems a little steep. shop around and get a second opinion. 400 to 500 seems like a more reasonable price

You will have to get more than one estimate if you want to find the best price.

Looks like barnacles are growing on your hood. That sucks. Yeah go get a few estimates and see who has the best prices.

I was recently told $800 to fix my stone chips and repaint my hood. It might not be too far out of the ballpark.

Man that sucks. yea its been pissing me off haha. I think thats how it started with the stone chips. Heres my hypothesis: rocks got kicked up and put small cracks in the clear coat, then water got into the cracks and froze in the winter making them worse, unfortunately i have to park outside so its only gonna get worse. I guess i can buy a cover for it this winter while im at school but it looks like im a little too late now and the damage is already done.

agreed. i have my rear bumper being repainted right now for $380 (paid by someone else), the front bumper and side skirt and all chips filled for $120 more and M3 mirrors cleaned up and mounted for $40 too. Call around and ask if they do rust repair- there are many "collision" body shops that only want to replace entire sections of your car when all you want is a spot touch up. You want a smaller shop on a back road that actually smells like filler putty and primer. i swear, my nose knows the difference!

I'd part it out ASAP. Just kidding, but seriously shop around a little more. Heck it might be worth it to suck it up and get a complete respray next summer or during the winter when business is slow they might cut you a deal, but expect to pay between 2-3k for a complete. This is definitely one of those things where you get what you pay for.

If the hood actually needs to be stripped down to bare metal, perhaps you could do that part yourself? That would at least save you the cost of that labor.

I will be spraying my hood, bumpers, and skirts myself. I plan to do the above, using airplane grade paint stripper to get the old paint off the hood. It's three layers, one good, two crap. I'll post pictures of how it turns out.

like stated, get some aircraft stripper, and strip the hood yourself. also go to a paint shop and have them mix up the paint themselves. if you have the hood primered and ready to go, and have the paint ready to go, it shouldent cost more then 200 bucks to get sprayed!

I think you would have to be veeeerry lucky to find a hood in a salvage yard in good or better condition then yours.
Around here 700$ isn't all that bad. My pops just had 3 body pannels done and it was around 3500$. It was a nice shop but at least it was done properly and it matches perfectly.
I would go to a shop with a good rep and get a nice jod done to ur nice car.
