It is not against the law, but it may be against their ToS agreement.

Anyways, there's a couple websites floating around that do VIN checks, the links I have are outdated and were taken down now though, so I can't help.

I heard you could make an ebay ad for free and obviously put the VIN in and they'll give you an autocheck report, then you just delete the ad.
