Default Diesel engine like noise & terrible chassis vibration!

Hi guys,

I finally purchased my 1997 318ti automatic about 3 months ago after lurking these boards for the last few years.

So, the car is great, does everything I want it to except these 2 major annoying problems.

Problem #1

Intermittent (75% of the time) diesel like engine noise coupled with accelerator pedal vibration (these 2 things happen at the same time, when one is absent so is the other). I have changed oil to Mobil 1 15w50 within 2 weeks of buying the car hoping it would clear the noise but no such luck.

Problem #2

Terrible chassis vibration when in idle which can be felt coming from underneath the floor board. I have replaced the engine mounts and that didnt solve anything except making me $200 poorer.

Somebody help me diagnose these things, anyone ever heard or experience any of this?

Thanks

how many miles on her? new plugs or any other standard "tune up" type maintenance done (air filter, fuel filter)? checked vacuum lines for any visible cracks?

I'd check transmission mounts. I'm not sure if they're the same as Manual tran. mts...but that's where I'd look next.

Plugs have been changed...

The car runs just fine, no lag in performance or anything, just these very annoying intermittent noises/vibrations.

same problem here. I had the UUC Stage 2 clutch installed and the rear Knock Sensor was damaged and stopped working. The Error code came up. The engine runs as though it is missing with a strong vibration at idle and is most pronounced between 3k – 4k RPM. Here is what I replaced:

Front & Rear Knock Sensor
Starter (old)
Intake manifold Gasket
Fuel Injectors
Fuel Injector Vacuum hose system
Fuel Pressure regulator
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Wires
Coil (damaged threads and old)
Water Pump & Pulley
Thermostat
Radiator
Coolant Hoses (All)

NO CHANGE!!!

Problem still there and I'm getting sick of it, but Error code is gone. This is what I am looking at for this issue:

-Improper balance on Flywheel and Clutch causing resonance vibration (bad Damper)???
-Check torque on Clutch bolts.
-Clogged and or damaged CAT.
-Damaged piston ring and or valve due to Detonation when Knock Sensors were bad (will Compression Test) but there is NO SMOKE FROM EXHAUST at any point.
-Clogged Fuel Filter.
-Bad Timing Chain and or Chain Tensioner.
-Bad Throttle Position sensor. (Test)
-Test Airflow Meter. (Test)
-Front Pully Damper (Crank Pulley).

I'll let you all know what happens

My problem turned out to be an exhaust leak at the manifold. Still does not feel quite right but were getting there. I'm trying to just ignore seeing as how we will be dropping in a 2.8 by the beginning of the summer.

wow... you've got three threads going! I have to hand it to you, you really took the shotgun approach here, starting multiple new threads and jacking other people's threads to get a diagnosis on your problem.
