Default tempted. 92 325i m50 and my 95 ti

a few months back i picked up a 92 325i, found a bunch of rust in the rockers and frame so i stripped it and scrapped the chassis. i've been parting it on Craigslist ever since, but had no interest in anyone buying the m50.

so i have been thinking.. this m50 has 154k on it, 30k less than my 95 Active Ti's stock m42. I have the complete motor and trans, engine harness and dme..i'll have to look at the # on the dme. The only accessory i dont have for the engine is the p/s pump, it was leaking so bad i left it go with the car.

what am i looking at to swap this into the ti? i'm very experienced with swaps after owning an import performance shop for 10 yrs, but this is my first jump into swapping a BMW believe it or not. Since i started back to college, time is short and i only have fri sat sun to complete the swap and be running for monday. I can weld for the exhaust work.

I just sold the guage cluster for this engine..should i have kept it?

I have searched and read a lot on the swap section of the forum, i just want to be prepared to drop it and go.

any advice is appreciated.. swapping wire locations in the round harness plug i expect, i have the engine and trans on a rolling cart and will take it out to beside the ti and see if they match up before hand so i can be prepared.

anything else i need to look out for?

Do it!!!! Just received my 6cyl m cluster yesterday( about to install it now).. The m50 feels good.. I have a 93 I think (if in 5-10 years my engine craps although good at 83,000 I'll get an e46 engine).. Check my thread in the engine swaps part.. 318timkz x Chris did the work..

yea, i was just reading your thread last night. does the 4 cyl cluster work at all with the m50? i can contact the guy i sold my m50 cluster to, since i think he has a 4 cyl car anyway.

forgot to mention i also have the m50 radiator too. anything else?

since the starter is still hooked up to the complete engine and tranny i think i am going to crank it to get a compression reading on each of the cylinders to see if this will be worthwhile first.

Must be same year as chassis or newer to be legal. I'd build one but never sell it. Any follow-on buyer could come after ya in court if they failed smog.

just checked on my dme, 402 red label.. still deciding. making the idea sweeter is a potential buyer for my m42, same guy that just bought the m44 out of my 97 z3 last month for his other car.

Its a long boring story but the short version is I sold a car to a guy from OR who sold it to a guy from WA who got the vin inspected and found out the frame was a 78 not a 84 like the rest of the truck (Including the cab) I had to pay to get it to Oregon, have it inspected, fix the problems and get it back to him, only cost me like 1000 dollars for a truck I sold for 2000. Bleh...
And I did not even do the swap, but title trail ended with me... arg.

okay, switching gears a bit here.

what am i looking at in order to swap this same 1992 m50 into my early 1997 z3 drift car until i get the 2jzgte swap parts together for it.

basically i need a car to run the season with, and the m44 belongs in another z3.. so the m50 is going to be drafted into duty. the extra 40-50hp should help out a lot for the time being.

EWS wont be an issue.. i can run switches for the fuel pump and ignition..etc if i have to. What wires do i need to make it run?

You can't run switches, the ignition is directly fired by the PCM/ECU you have to get a non ews ecu or have a program to delete it in the PCM logic. OR enable the EWS with matching keys.

same with using a 1992 402 dme? thought ews was a non-issue being that early? no wires i can clip that would talk to the ews?
