Default trouble removing control arms

i'm trying to remover the control arms, but the bolt on the ball joint and the middle one (on the elbow of the control arm) won't come out. I'm trying everything that bavauto reccommended in their "fast times" send out and i'm just about to go back out there with the chilton manual. as for the middle one (on the elbow) i am hitting it from above with a 3 foot long steel rod.
ive done this before with a friend under a year ago to replace the ball joints, so i dont see why its so much harder this time around.
any helps is much appreciated, i'll check back in if i still cant figure it out,
thanks
chris.

you need to use whats called a pickle fork/ball joint separator. insert between subframe and top of balljoint, and strike with a 3 lb. mini sledge hammer. you can find a pickle fork at any auto store or sears---sears will have the sledge too.

can't use the pickle fork, cuz i'm keeping the ball joints and stuff in tact.
i just threw everything back together. it'll be going to the shop this week. after 4 hours of whacking and prying i would really like to see a shop do it without destroying the ball joint boots. **** this car.

well, since the ball joints are new as of this past spring, theyre not that rusted if at all. also, since its a tapered bolt, being so tight there is no way a penetrating catalyst could even touch it.
thanks anyways though
