I was driving home from Las Vegas and my engine was only at the 1/4 mark, but when I got in town it got back to the normal temp. It was 38 degrees outside and had plenty of cold air going through it on the freeway, but I have never seen this happen in other cars before in similar situations. | | | 11-28-2005, 08:39 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2004 Location: MD/VA/DC Posts: 834 | same thing here my car is doing the same and it take my car forever to worm up i think there is something wrong | | | 11-28-2005, 09:07 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | It may be the thermostat. Try turning the HVAC to cold, then turn on the heat. Engine temp should noticeably drop. __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 11-28-2005, 09:20 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Utah Posts: 100 | i would try that, but my heater control doesn't work hint hint vigilantemotors... it's fine around town so im not worried about it. | | | 11-28-2005, 05:24 PM | #5 | TRETEN IRGENDEINES ESELS Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: Rhode Island Posts: 3,687 | Mine is the same also,i'll drive my car 70 miles to boston and it's at the 1/4 mark the whole time, then once in the city it climbs to halfway. I know this wasn't like this last year. __________________ 98 Avus Blue 318 ti Active clear outs all around, stealth turning signals, blue led interior lights, 35% tinted windows,K&N air filter, 12" Kenwood Sub, MTX Thunder Amp,Alpine cd changer, Leatherz Armrest,ACS Pedals/Handbrake/FloorMats & Vitesse Tuning Carbon Fiber B-Pillars/CF Spark Plug Cover, New 16" MSW Typer 14 Rims on Goodyear Triple Treds www.myspace.com/avusblueti | | | 11-28-2005, 05:41 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2004 Location: Florida Posts: 1,595 | Same happend last night when I was going back to Orlando, but I am in warm Florida. | | | 11-28-2005, 05:55 PM | #7 | doesn't care about you. I'm in Wisconsin and even when it's below zero, it still sits in the middle. I would check your fluid level, make sure you have enough antifreeze. Also, the therostats on our cars are known to be junk. Replace it if you haven't already. When the gauge is at the 1/4 mark, how hot is your heater? Does it get warmer in town when the gauge jumps up to 1/2 way? __________________ '99 Dinan M3 | | | 11-28-2005, 06:00 PM | #8 | TRETEN IRGENDEINES ESELS Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: Rhode Island Posts: 3,687 | Quote: Originally Posted by DustenT That doesn't sound right. But last year it was always at the half way mark. My anifreeze is at the cold mark on the car,was low during the summer and added more since then it hasn't dropped. __________________ 98 Avus Blue 318 ti Active clear outs all around, stealth turning signals, blue led interior lights, 35% tinted windows,K&N air filter, 12" Kenwood Sub, MTX Thunder Amp,Alpine cd changer, Leatherz Armrest,ACS Pedals/Handbrake/FloorMats & Vitesse Tuning Carbon Fiber B-Pillars/CF Spark Plug Cover, New 16" MSW Typer 14 Rims on Goodyear Triple Treds www.myspace.com/avusblueti | | | 11-28-2005, 06:08 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2004 Location: MD/VA/DC Posts: 834 | Quote: Originally Posted by andrewsarg101 i would try that, but my heater control doesn't work hint hint vigilantemotors... it's fine around town so im not worried about it. | your not worried this could damage your motor i think you need to get it fixed | | | 11-28-2005, 06:24 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Manassas, VA Posts: 4,129 | I'm in New York....my temp is the same as DustenT Quote: Originally Posted by DustenT Mine sits at the half way mark all the time. | __________________ 1998 (July) 318ti, 5-spd OEM Armrest Blaupunkt Heidelberg CD50 CD Player/Compact Drive MP3 Player Diamond Audio 5.25" rear speakers Navman ICN 530 GPS BMWALARM.COM (with comfort settings) after market alarm system Magnecor 8.5mm wires M-Z3 Shifter/Momo Knob Burlwood Dashboard Stromung Exhaust X-brace Racing Dynamics Front Strut Bar Carbonio C.A.I. 17" Rial Rims Vader Seats/Heated/Lumbar Support M-tech Steering Wheel/Front Sway Bar/Front & Rear Bumper Depos/w 6500K Angel Eyes/6000K HIDs Clear Corners M3 Mirrors UUC Light Weight Flywheel/M5 Clutch/M3 Clutch Slave E28 3.46 LSD/Mcoupe Cover/E30 Flanges & Halfshafts UUC S.S. It should stay halfway, no matter what vehicle speed, engine speed, heater status, external temperature, etc. The cooling at cruising speed is due to the coolant flowing to the radiator when it shouldn't be. Mine stuck open a couple months ago. I got a new assembly from PelicanParts for $19, but I see now they are $31. Also, buy new upper/lower radiator hoses while you're at it, like I should have It's quite easy to change, just four little bolts and two hose clamps. The worst part by far is draining/changing the coolant, it such a messy process. Good Luck! | | | 11-28-2005, 09:17 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Muncie, Indiana Posts: 1,551 | Yep I second the thermostat. I had it happen to me last year. Took forever for it to warm up. At least a good half an hour of driving for it to warm up. Now it warms up after 5-10 minutes of driving, depending on the outside temperature. | | | 11-28-2005, 10:04 PM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2003 Location: cary, nc Posts: 2,259 | same here...thermo stuck open...takes forever to warm up... __________________ 1995 318ti Active Pioneer Speakers [] Aluminum Billet door locks [] ACS Pedals/Deadrest [] ACS Shift Knob / E-Brake Handle [] Clear Corners/Tails/Sides [] Sylvania Exterior Lighting [] Custom CAI [] Dinan Engine Chip [] Dinan Transmission Chip [] H&R Race Springs [] Tokico Illumina Shocks [] BMW X-Brace [] Relocated Lighter Mod [] Custom iPod Mod http://www.cardomain.com/id/robcarync | | | 11-29-2005, 06:52 AM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Utah Posts: 100 | i would agree with the thermostat in my situation, but my engine heats up to normal temps in 5-10 min like normal and will stay there when i drive around town. And right when i got off the freeway on my way home from vegas it went back to middle and stayed there. i dont know if it was just a fluke or not. im going to take it on the freeway tomorrow night and see if it does it again. | | | 11-29-2005, 07:45 AM | #15 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | it may not stick every time. it likes to mess with your head ... and is waiting to TRULY fail until it's really cold out __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
