I heard to use automatic transmission fluid. I went over to autozone and got 2 bottles of Castrol high mileage ATF - is this good for the tranny? Anyone have any experience with it? | | | 03-12-2010, 01:02 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2010 Location: Georgia Posts: 148 | You should be okay with that. at the dealer we'd recommend castrol dexron III atf because thats what our system says e36 318i/is/ic/it all require. and i've only sold what we have here. i guess thats as close to experience that i can get! hope that helps homey __________________ It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives. | | | 03-12-2010, 02:07 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | Depends on what the sticker on your trans says. Some later model e36s require MTL, I know mine does. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 03-12-2010, 02:52 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Minneapolis Posts: 1,587 | If you have a transmission needing ATF (by the sticker, as spidertri stated), that High Mileage Castrol should be just fine as it meets the Dexron III standard. I looks like most of the ATFs on the market meet Dexron III, among dozens of other standards. It's hard to go wrong fluid-wise with a system (transmission, steering, etc.) that require Dex III. My M3 and ti both take ATF, and they are both manuals. But again, do what the red sticker tells you to. You'll find it on the side of the tranny by the fill plug. __________________ *Except 318ti '97 318ti M-Sport '95 M3 BMWCCA | | | 03-12-2010, 04:11 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | I use ATF, it works fine and it's what my car calls for | | | 03-12-2010, 04:34 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2009 Location: NYC Posts: 134 | thanks for all your feedback guys.. going to look at the sticker on the tranny.. should have done it when i had the car up when i changed my oil. | | | 03-12-2010, 04:57 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | you could check your owners manual too, but by the time you read this you probably will have already crawled underneath your car | | | 03-12-2010, 05:05 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: Louisiana Posts: 1,093 | has any one changed there trans filter in a auto ? i work at oreillys and i constantly have ppl comming in and gettin the filter . is it really worth it? __________________ was the 1 an only Bagged Ti on 19's!! | | | 03-16-2010, 08:49 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2010 Location: Tulsa, OK Posts: 252 | i have a 96 318ti w/5 speed manual, i called the BMW dealer today to get some fluids, oil filter, fuel filter....etc; anyway, i asked the parts guy (who said he used to b a tech) about changing my trans fluid and he said it takes "MTF-LT2" and i said ill take 2 quarts, and he said they only carry it in bulk and i would have to bring my own container __________________ 1996 318ti base: m44, 5 spd, lsd - 18x8 bremmer kraft wheels w/sumitumo tires 225/40R18 & bmw locking lug studs, 10mm spacers in rear, halo headlights, cold air intake, koni str.t struts and shocks w/mounts, h&r sport springs, serp belts, control arm & tie rod kits, front sway bar links, JVC kd-x50bt headunit w/ipod hook up in the glove box, alpine sps-500(front and rear), jl audio 10" powerwedge max, jl audio 250.1 amp, motor mounts, fuel filter, passenger side window motor, drivers lower window run, muffler hanger kit, various interior bulbs, left door striker/ajar switch, lower hood latches, changed from gray vinal to black leather shift and parking brake boots, m3 weighted shift knob, ngk-r spark plugs, magnecor spark plug wires(blue),new cabin micro-filters,new headliner & a-pillar mouldings, 5w20 synth-blend oil and filter, BG Ultra Guard syn. rear end fluid & ls additive, BG Syncro Shift II syn. manual trans fluids, stainless steel braided brake lines and dot 4 fluid, extra brake light mod, new p/s reservoir and rubber hoses need to do - fix door panels, paint job, MORE MONEY!! | | | 03-16-2010, 10:25 PM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Minneapolis Posts: 1,587 | They sell the BMW MTF-LT2 in 5 liter containers at the dealer. Problem is they want $146.45 for the 5 liters at Tischer. My local dealer has it listed for $215.65. Stupidly insane. You can get Pentosin MTF2 (supposedly the same as the BMW branded fluid) at Pelican Parts.com for $21 / liter. Still way too much if you ask me. | | | 03-16-2010, 11:52 PM | #12 | Junior Member Join Date: Nov 2009 Location: Omaha, NE Posts: 17 | I havent had any personal experience with the castrol but their other oils are descent(not the best out there) but descent so you should have no problems. I do recommend Redline D4 ATF. When I first got my car there was only a cups worth of fluid and it was black but I put some of this stuff in and there was a drastic improvement. I had 2nd gear crunchiness and it is almost gone Its around $10 -/+ and you need two. Someone told me that putting new synthetic in an old transmission will wear out the seals faster but I still put it in and after 2 months no negative effects are there. | | | 03-17-2010, 05:15 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: Portland Or Posts: 2,666 | It doesn't wear them out, it just cleans them off, so without the dirt sometimes a weep will start...
