Hello, new to the 318 M42 world, although had plenty of 328/325s. I just bought a 1998 318ti w/187k. Been maintained meticoulsly. Runs great all rpm range except 4-5k rpm. It bucks and hesitates heavily and the CEL light just came on tonight while playing in that rpm range. Any ideas? Runs excellent otherwise. ANy ideas would be helpful. Haven't pulled codes yet... | | | 01-14-2010, 08:14 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: San Diego Posts: 231 | Cam sensor? | | | 01-14-2010, 03:59 PM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2010 Location: Orlando, FL Posts: 3 | How could I tell if it were a cam sensor? | | | 01-15-2010, 08:13 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: San Diego Posts: 231 | That sort of cutout with CEL coming on afterward is sometimes a camshaft position sensor. I'm making a wild guess from your description, but it happened to me. You have to read the codes to be sure. | | | 01-15-2010, 08:19 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Central NJ Posts: 2,440 | Sounds like it could be the intake's runner variable runner thing (I forget the name now). It's an M44 fyi, M42 was till 1995, 1996+ is M44. | | | 01-15-2010, 04:23 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Oxford, Ohio Posts: 868 | DISA Valve... but all of these are guesses. Pull the codes and we can really help. Autozone does it for free. | | | 01-18-2010, 11:07 PM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2010 Location: Orlando, FL Posts: 3 | ok, update. Replaced old, tired autlite plugs with factory NGKs. Cured problem and seemed to gain 10 HP! Also could have been oil pooled up in the spark plug tunnel due to a leaking valve cover gasket... Anyway, thanks for your help, glad it's running excellent now. | | | 01-24-2010, 07:35 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2009 Location: NYC Posts: 134 | you should replace your vc gasket or at least the gaskets for the spark plugs or it will foul out again | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
