Default how much gearbox oil?

I am changing the oil in my manual transmission and differential; but I can't find any mention of the fill volume for either. I have a standard year 2000 316i with the 1.9 litre M43TU engine. Any information out there?
Thanks

Yeah, I know where the holes are; I was wondering HOW MUCH oil I would need to fill each. I would estimate around 3 - 4 litres for the gearbox, but I can't find any definite information. Just so I know how much oil to buy! Thanks.

I use a little over 1 bottle of redline MTL. A little over 1 quart I think.

Same for the diff. You'll want to use gear oil on the diff, and manual transmission lubricant or ATF in the trans. I use synthetic diff oil for my diff. Either redline or royal purple.

1 1/3 qt is what I figured, but I didn't drain the first bottle bone dry with the Trans flush...prob 1.2 is spot then.

Diff I can remember how much the 168mm takes, more than 1 bottle, less than 2, sorry I can't be more of a help at the moment.

Thanks for the replies - I'll have a go at it this weekend, if I can find some sort of lube pump tomorrow morning.

Okay, okay. What he's saying is that you don't have to measure the oil. You can just fill until it runs out of the filler hole, and that's the amount you want. Of course, you should have the car level to use this method, and it's a bit of a PITA to jack up both ends, so yeah, maybe measure it.

Just use a gravity feed. Think beek b0ng. Clear vinyl tubing + a funnel. I think I use 5/8" for the trans. I think the diff hole is smaller. Just take the filler plugs to the hardware store and match the diameter with the tubing. Use 3-4' for the trans. Pop a funnel in one end. Wrap a paper towel around the other end and drop it down to the trans from above the engine compartment. Rest funnel on wiper blade or something, or have someone hold it, and go below to insert tube into trans. Fill funnel repeatedly until you use the 1.2L or oil runs out of the filler hole.

You can change the diff fluid with the car on the ground. No need to jack up both the front and back to keep it level. Just drop the spare and you can easily reach it. We are lucky. Changing the diff fluid in any other E36 is a nightmare.
