Also do i need to change the diff oil and the guy said its sealed so wont loose any fluid, he said it never has to be changed, i found this very weird. can someone please advise me thanks | | | 09-26-2008, 07:00 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Richmond Hill, GA Posts: 1,231 | Ok you could have had this question answered in the other thread you just started. not saying this to give you a hard time but to save you from the rest of the vultures. You're lucky most of them on the east coast are sleeping by now. To answer your question.... Yes you can use 0w40. nothing rare about that. check your diff fluid and if it seems burnt or low then you can change it. | | | 09-26-2008, 12:19 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | BWAH EAST COAST AWAKE! Hah, I'm about to do an oil change with 0w-40, all the threads I read recommend using that, as does BMW. I changed my diff fluid, pretty easy to do, I used Royal Purple 75w-90 gear oil and got rid of a "whining" noise coming from the diff, so I'd say it does have to be changed. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 09-26-2008, 04:19 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | I'm fairly sure that's what I used, no problems here | | | 09-26-2008, 08:56 PM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Sep 2008 Location: birmingham Posts: 20 | Quote: Originally Posted by spidertri BWAH EAST COAST AWAKE! Or should I use something thicker? __________________ | | | 10-06-2008, 05:42 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | 0w-40 is recommended for winter use because it is thinner and flows well when cold. Whereas a thicker oil would need to warm up before it would be able to flow as well as the 0w. There are differing opinions though. I have to say that I haven't had any problems with the 0w that people have reported. Since I changed the oil a week ago I haven't seen any oil spots on the ground and the oil level hasn't changed. (People said that the thinner oil would get through the gaskets and that the engines would burn more oil.) __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 10-06-2008, 08:08 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Annapolis/College Park Posts: 337 | I used the 5w-30 BMW Full Synthetic and haven't had any problems. It was like $5.30 a qt. from Tischer. ^Dave, I also used the RP 75w-90 in the diff and their Sychromax manual trans fluid in the...well...manual transmission. Feels smooth...and the old stuff that came out was nasty. __________________ She's no longer mine, but I gotta keep the pic Current euro: Black MkIII VW Gti VR6 | | | 10-06-2008, 08:20 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | Yeah dude, Royal purple is good stuff. I put the synchromax in my trans as well, very smooth shifting. Next oil change I am going to use RP 0w-40. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 10-09-2008, 03:35 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: Annapolis/College Park Posts: 337 | I'll try it if you try it. Just like how you're going to buy DDM coilovers, and if they're legit, I'll buy them too __________________ She's no longer mine, but I gotta keep the pic Current euro: Black MkIII VW Gti VR6 | | | 10-09-2008, 03:40 AM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | LOL, yeah no problem.
