Default New head unit or powered subwoofer?

I have a 1998 Ti with the stock (10 speaker) audio system, modified with a 1/8" RCA input.

Wow, is it terrible. I replaced both 5.25" in the front with decent aftermarket units, and went up to 6.5" in the rear. And I'm shocked at how easily the bass distorts. My car is a Cali Top and at highway speeds the stock stereo is pointless.

All I use it for is to connect to my phone, which is what I play everything through. I've read a lot of suggestions on replacing the head unit, but my question is: Which is the best sub $150 solution here.

1. New Head Unit with existing speakers
2. Powered sub-woofer with line-level inputs.

Thanks in advance,

Neel

IMO, just changing the head unit to a decent aftermarket will do wonders. I wouldn't bother running a sub off the factory deck. I have a good Pioneer deck running highs through the factory amp (I have the same system as you), and RCAs to a cheap 100w amp and a cheap 8 in a custom box. It sounds 10x better than the factory.

Dustoff, I do like that stealth 10, though. Fiberglass enclosure?

Stereo summary:
Amplifier: JL Audio RD600/6
Head Unit: Pioneer: AVH3300NEX
Speakers:
Front: Bavaudio 5.25"Mid-woofer, 2.5” Midrange & 1” Tweeter
Rear: Focal 4" Midrange & 1” Tweeter
Sub-woofer: Trunk: JL Audio 10”

JL Audio is an upward firing sub, with a ducted port in carpeted Sub-Box. It fits nicely under the carpet.
