Default start-up problem

Hi,

This is the first time I'm posting a message to the forum, I hope I'm posting under the correct subject.

I have a startup problem with my manual 95 318ti. It starts running when I turn the key, but stops in 2-3 seconds. It seems that it doesnt get gas after startup. I tried to keep the rev up approximately at 1500 by pushing the gas pedal, but engine check light will not go off. However, if I hit to 3000-3500 revs, engine check light goes off. The car stopped at a mall, so I tried to drive back home by pressing on the gas(otherwise it stops at idling) after a mile or so and the car started to work properly(wouldn't stop at idling if I lift my foot off the gas pedal). I checked the connections, fuse for the fuel pump, there are no loose connections, fuse seems okay.

Has anyone any idea what could be the reason?

I had they similar problem with the same symptoms. The boot between the MAF and the intake was cracked and hidden to the eye by the ribs in the boot. I replace it for around $35 ran excellent. It could be one of the other air intake hoses too.

Update: After the weekend, I started up the car today right away. Except for this time, I kept the ignition key at position-II a little and waited for the check lights, etc to turn off and then started the car. The idling rev was a little low, but it worked. Maybe I should set the idling rev a little higher. I wonder whether it was something to do with the gas quality(By the way,I always use 89) For now, the car seems to operate okay.

Sounds like it also could be the automatic idle speed motor.
