Default high mileage should i be concerned?

Hi can anyone tell me if a 1995 318ti auto which has covered 178000miles go on for much longer ive heard of cars going on for upto 250000+miles but as ive never owned a automatic or a BMW i was just hoping that someone could fill me in. Im 23 and my knowledge of cars and their habits are limited. Im putting it in for a engine flush, oil and filter change this friday. I presume if i keep the oil topped out dont drive like a idiot etc...she'll go for a few more miles yet.

that sounds like a good plan to me, I'd have the diff fluid changed to if you haven't already, I think you only need to change tranny fluid if it starts acting up or something, but I'm not sure

HAHAHAHA!!!

I was thinking the same thing Seriously though, It depends on how the car has been cared for. Did you happen to get any of the maintenance records with the car when you purchased it? A car that's been properly maintained can give you a good 300k+ miles while the same car if poorly maintained can break down before it reaches 100k miles. Personally, If I didn't know the history of the car, I'd start by inspecting and possibly replacing the common wear items such as hoses, belts and bushings. The first thing that comes to mind is the cooling system. Our cars have been know to have cooling system problems after about 130k miles. Particularly the two plastic coolant fittings and the radiator. These things have all been known to crack, leak coolant and cause your car to overheat. If the temp goes to the red for more than a minute, this usually means game over for your headgasket and a very expensive repair bill. If the car has 178k miles and these parts haven't been replaced, it's a ticking timebomb.

BMW's are very durable. I expect any well taken care of motor to last ≥300,000 miles. Now, the body may rust out before that, plus little extras will break, but the meat of these cars are very solid. As for the automatic, they are actually pretty good in terms of durablility. Nothng notorious about them at all.

Wouldn't be concerned but like jess and others have stated I would think about changing out some parts. Like valve cover gaskets, hoses, radiator if it's leaking, change all fluids, and anything else that needs to be cleaned or replaced. Your car should last a very long time. And when the engine decides to go then you can just swap in a 6cly.

Had my car for over a year now with 160k miles now (60k on the replaced engine). Only major problem I had was the thermostat. And that was a easy fix. I've spent only $50 in repairs since I've owned my car.

These are very dependable cars IMO.

A compression test will tell you a lot on how much longer the engine will last.

Like others said, replacing a few inexpensive parts on the cooling system is good preventative maintenance.
