What I settled on was this: Aluminum cone, 30WRMS/60WMax, 60-10000Hz frequancy range, 82.6dB 1W/1M blah blah blah. It was a whopping 12 bucks! I mounted it using part of the old speaker basket that I cut off near the top. It sounds good, nice and clean. A lot more low end punch than the stock speaker. I'll take some pics when I do the right speaker. Here's the place I got it from... http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=290-212 __________________ No more ti. | | | 06-19-2010, 02:15 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | so you bought the magnet and they through in a free speaker? | | | 06-23-2010, 01:20 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: MD/PA/DC Posts: 1,629 | Comparison pic... They look nice, I might have to pick up a set for my blown rear mids. Looking forward to seeing pics from the other side's install. tbw __________________ 1/1997 M44 ti M-Sport Schwartz II | | | 06-24-2010, 12:00 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: MD/PA/DC Posts: 1,629 | They fit fine. I'll take a pic of the installation if I remember. __________________ No more ti. | | | 06-25-2010, 11:01 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: MD/PA/DC Posts: 1,629 | More Pics! __________________ No more ti. | | | 11-10-2010, 08:49 AM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: SoCal Posts: 9 | btw, those speakers are $24 each, not for a pair. I bought a $50 pair of 4t Pioneer speaker to replace my rears and the sound quality got "worse". I think it's because they are two-way speakers so I lost a ton of bass. | | | 11-10-2010, 02:42 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: MD/PA/DC Posts: 1,629 | Quote: Originally Posted by Mellowman btw, those speakers are $24 each, not for a pair. I think they sound a little better than the originals, though I was driving with the fader set all forward for a few months. Easy to install, just dremeled the old speaker tabs to leave the mounting ring of the speakers in the mounting bracket. Then drilled holes in the mounting ring and then screwed in self drilling screws to mount the new speaker. Sound does distort at full volume but so do the other speakers (maybe it's the amp) and it's not really an issue for me since well before max volume you can't here anything outside the car anyways so safety issue. Again, thanks the post. Was originally thinking of spending more than 2x as much on a pair of 5 1/4 pioneer component speakers (so replacing the rear tweeters as well) and 5 1/4 mounting brackets off ebay (from uk, < $20). But given the sound quality is really determined by the amp, improvement in sound quality would probably be minimal. I was also not looking to spend more than I needed to. __________________ '95 318ti sport. rear light mod. With the speakers on sale the pair was about half the cost of one factory replacement. Even at the 24 bucks a pop they still cost barely more than one replacement from BMW... Glad I could help! __________________ No more ti. | | | 11-29-2010, 11:55 PM | #12 | Junior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: SoCal Posts: 9 | FYI, the speakers are on sale again @ $12 each. __________________ '95 318ti sport. rear light mod. Posts: 18 | I know that this is an old thread, but I just wanted to share that I bought 2 of these. I was able to remove the old speakers from the plastic mounts intact. The new Parts Express speakers will semi-snap into the brackets, with the 4 corners sticking through the 4 slots that the original speaker baskets slide down into before you twist them to lock into place. I glued the new speakers into the brackets with some adhesive sealant and so far, so good. While these aren't the speakers for a "killer" sound system, they sound a lot better then my stock ones (especially the one with no surround left in it). | | | 05-24-2014, 08:24 AM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Sacramento, CA Posts: 2,451 | Thanks FamilyTruckster! Replacements for the 95 Active rear speakers. Cut out old speakers with a Dremel Old speakers Speakers will mount to remaining ring I predrilled to not crack the plastic, Then used self tapping screws to secure the speakers Added a dap of JB weld to further secure the screws Resolder the connections back on. Ready for reinstall Pretty easy replacement. I hope the pics help someone out. __________________ 1998 318ti Sport - "Cali" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, Cali top 1998 318ti Sport - "Max" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, S52 1997 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior 1995 318ti Active - "Blanca" Alpineweib III/Schwartz leather interior Other Current Bimmers: 2006 530i / 2000 2.3L Z3 / 1997 1.9L Z3 / 1999 540it 1997 318ti Sport - "Huera" - RIP 1995 318ti Active - RIP 1995 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Sold 1994 325i Sedan - "Jade" - Sold 1991 318ic - "Bert" - Sold 1985 635csi sold 1984 533i "Max" Sold 1984 318i sold BMWCCA #160411 SUPPORT 318ti.org! I easily got the old speakers of the mounts by breaking out away from the old glue. I'm just waiting for my speakers to come in before I compete my install.
