Default Engine ticking at idle

I've recently been hearing a ticking sound when the engine is at idle.

It's like a few clicks or ticks every so often. It's not too loud but loud enough to notice it. First time I've heard this. Any suggestions or ideas?

Just changed it about two weeks ago. Didn't hear it until today. Don't think this is anything major, but don't want it to lead to something, you know? Any noise like that gets to me ;(

Lol jared, your car always seems to be making some kind of noise xD

is it a similar noise like last time? (that sound coming from your dashboard) or is this a completely different issue?

M42 or M44?

The exhaust manifold can blow on an M42 causing what sounds like a ticking noise.

Mobile 1 - 15w-50

Not sure on last service. I bought the car five months ago, on the dash I have half the service lights still lit up when you start the car.

It might be worth doing an oil change. I use 10w 40.

i could do that if you think i really should, what's the reason you think it's the oil?

I've heard stories of others making similar noises and an oil change cleared things right up. The service lights can be reset without doing a service so I always get a service done after buying a car, unless there is clear history and receipts that show otherwise.

Alternatively it could be a gasket somewhere. You may just have to try a process of elimination. Can you actually pin point where the noise is?

haven't been able to pinpoint it, i just know its something in the engine area because when I'm sitting at a light or in the driveway you can hear it tick every so often. i'll have to open the hood up and give a listen. thing is it's not like it makes the sound often. it could sometimes be a few clicks/ticks then nothing of 20-30 seconds.

just out of curiosity, is the 15w-50 too much for the TI?

BMW recommend 10w 40 for the 318is (I have the M42) engine so I would assume it would be the same for the TI.

Quite alright mate! If you can, get a video of the noise.
