some ppl say at least 10 mins?! idling that long isn't very good.

i give it about a min, and drive off. keep revs under 3k. in my m3, watch the oil temp gauge rise, then give it some go when its finally warmed up nicely.

just think about the e46 m3, with the rev gauge with the sequential shift lights. cant rev too high until the oils warmed up.

Your car will warm up faster by driving it easy than letting it idle for 10 minutes. Plus your diff and tranny will be ice cold. I warm up my car long enough to clear my windows of snow or ice.

So, that explains why everyone around here doesn't clean the snow/ice off the cars. Hop in and drive, it's bad for the motor to let the car warm up idling! Who cares if the windows are fogged up and the driver can't see....LOL

Guess I won't bother warming it up anymore. Damn thing sounds like it's gonna blow apart at 3K when its cold....

I always let my Subaru idle to warm it up, but that's only because it's a piece of junk and I don't give a crap about it, I wouldn't do it with a car I actually like

Hey you gotta do what you gotta do. It's not safe to drive with foggy or iced up windows.

But it'll hurt the motor! Seriously, I really wish more people knew that it's a bad idea to drive blind....

exactly, all you need is a 3" by 3" square directly in your line of view, don't bother cleaning the lights though, that's just redundant

It certainly isn't good for the motor but neither is slamming into an oncoming car.

I have to admit, I'm guilty of this I usually roll down the windows, crank the defroster and heater up full blast, wipe a little porthole on the windsheild, flick the wipers once and take off.

CoolJess! Heey buddy I'm reading the BMW manual scan and they are saying it's too long to idle to warmup to full operating temperature (normal operating temperature) so I guess how much you might need would depend on temp among other things. Only 30 seconds in very cold weather apparently, so in warm weather I suppose not very much at all. I usually like to see the water temp move a little, but that seems to take awhile .. maybe 3 minutes or more.. far longer than I need apparently. Still what is necessary isn't necessarily what is optimal.

They do also mention not loading the engine too much, how well you can control yourself out on the road might be a consideration. maybe when I hookup oil temp guage it will be a better indicator instead of waiting minutes, I can wait seconds..(but I doubt it for the way I am getting ready to drive)

They mention deposits, but in the context that you should give it some gas eventually (stop and go, not highway cruise) to shake and blow the deposits out I gather..

I know you started this thread to get away from me, but just thought I'd share what I'm seeing, I don't remember it all the first time, but I was looking for more specific information the first time.
