Default Keyless Entry

i just bought a 98 318ti. it has power doors/windows, but the person who sold me the car had only 1 key and it doesnt have any buttons or remote for keyless entry.

i took my car to the bmw dealer bc it says its prewired for BMW security system and i wasnt sure if it already had it or if the guy i bought the car from just lost the keyless entry remote or something.

i read here that it should just be a white box under the hood, which the dealer checked and didnt find.

so i want a keyless entry system, i dont care much for the security system but i dont think i can get 1 without the other. i really want a new key with the 2 or 3 buttons on the key itself, how can i get this?

lol i have a 95 and i had the hardest time finding my keyless entry.... it was under the dash hidden in a kickbar at the knees it looked like... you have to take the bottom panel/glovebox out to find it....

Key fobs are $80 im buying one though once i get my school money back next month

I had the same probable finding mine. It was also hidden under the dash in the kickbar. Ohnonomiss do you have a red light near your cigarette lighter? If you do, than I believe you at least use to have an alarm system. Also do you know if yours is an active package, if it is than I believe the car originally came with it.

you can buy a new transmitter off of ebay for $30 thats where i got mine at. Just program it their is a DIY on here. if you do have an alarm their should be a red l.e.d. light next to your cigarette lighter thing.

I don't think you could even get the key with the buttons built into it for the ti, you have to have the separate key fob (aka remote)

I couldn't find a definite answer and I didn't want to start a new thread.

I'm confused on which remote/transmitter/fob I need for my car. I've read that the 3 button fob is needed for build dates up to 8/95. Anything after 8/95 requires a 2 button fob. But there have been conflicting reports on this site and others. I've also read that some alarm modules/brain/computer can work with both 2 and 3 button fobs...

I found this statement on BFC

"The only way to tell for sure is to check the FCC I'D on the control module. It should be the same as the one on the fob except the last digit will be a zero"

I feel good about this statement. The FCC ID on my 10/95 module is A269ZUA110. I found a 2 button remote online with FCC ID A269ZUA111.

Maybe you guys with a 3 button fob can confirm the above statement next time you have your glovebox removed...

I posted somewhere about the PN's for the modules. If you can pull the module out and look at it you can tell which one you have. If it has the door to insert the chip from the 3 button remote for programming....well it's for a 3 button remote. Mine is a 2/96 and uses the 3 button....

Gotcha! The one installed in my car doesn't have the trap door. I have a spare module that does have the door. Thanks for the confirmation!

I have a riddle (sort of) for you guys. Mine is a 7/97 Ti. I did get a key fob from the previous owner. Its the two button one.

When I press either button there is a definite alarm call from under the engine bay (I presume, of course). But this action doesnt lock anything. And neither does anything else that I can decipher.

Ohh and I do have the little red l.e.d near the lighter.

Someone please take a dig at this.

Thanks much in advance.

Manan, If you use the key to lock the drivers door, do all of the doors lock?
