Default Oil filter change after oil change

Hi,

This might be a dumb question, but my technical maintenance experience level is pretty low, so I figured I should ask.

A little while ago, I changed my oil. Due to time constraints, I was unable to replace the oil filter. Now I'm afraid that opening the oil filter casing would be like poking a hole in a full cup. Can I safely open the oil filter casing to replace the filter? And if not, is it okay to leave an old filter in until my next oil change?

Thanks in advance!
