I am looking for a couple e36 m42s with auto trans for some swaps into older cars....1970s and want to make sure I get engines/wiring without EWS. Do any of the 95 cars have ews? I know the switch to the m44 was right around then and understand the m44 is obdII and has EWS-II. I have done this swap with the e30 m42 and a 5 speed trans but never with the auto and I think starting with an e36 engine and harness would be best to integrate the auto trans. Do all pre 96 cars have the m42 or did some have the m44? Mostly I can figure out the wiring on any OBDI non EWS car. I think dealing with the EWS and OBDII will be a PITA and would like to stay away from it. | | | 03-08-2010, 04:30 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | the 96 model year was when they switched to the M44, I know my 95 has EWSI, not sure about when they started using it though | | | 03-08-2010, 04:35 AM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Mar 2010 Location: bay city, michigan Posts: 13 | excellent thanks I think I may have figured out what I need to do. After reading the ETK a bit and comparing the 93 vs the 95 it looks like I can just use a late 93 dme on the 95 harness and it will work without ews. I really love the ETKs...... | | | 03-08-2010, 06:39 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | M42s with a silver labelled dme have ews in them, which is 95 only. 96 kicked off the m44 and ews2. EWS 1 is defeated with a chip or by cutting the ews wire. ews2 requires a software reflash. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 03-08-2010, 10:15 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Bremerhaven, Germany Posts: 977 | Quote: Originally Posted by Bluebimma ... ews2 requires a software reflash... | ... or a sacrificial transponder chip laid before the antenna ring.
