I'm getting close to throwing an S50 into my drift car. What kind of changes to the rear end did you guys make? Obviously, I'm grabbing an M coupe or Z3 M diff, and possibly axles (not sure if they'll fit or work). Did you have to reinforce the mount points for your subframe? Keep in mind: This car WILL be driven like it was stolen. Thanks in advance. | | | 04-25-2010, 10:07 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2007 Location: Rocky Hill, CT Posts: 1,065 | I have nothing done but bushings and the like. Well, that, a LSD diff, then sway bars and the like but I haven't re-inforced my subframe. I'll be pulling the trunk apart to check it this summer __________________ 1995 318TI base. 95 2.5L from 325IS. S50 cams+pistons, e36 M3 front brakes. H&R race springs F+R. I drive my car like I stole it, never an issue. its the front thats a little squirrley.. 6cyl springs up front are a must IMO, although I havn't had the coinage to do so, it limits throwing it around like you would with the 4banger... but having more WHP than the m44's BHP makes up for it __________________ 11/97 Base 328Ti | | | 04-27-2010, 07:11 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Cincinnati Posts: 890 | Quote: Originally Posted by Philly Mcoupe diff + E30 halfshafts here. Medium case diff with the larger half shafts (E30 or Z3). LSD if you can afford it. 6cyl springs are pretty much required in the front. __________________ SOLD!!! 1999 332ti //M Sport Titanium Silver M3 S52 3.2 I-6 Engine, M3 Clutch w/ ti Getrag Trans, Z3 3.15 LSD medium case diff and half shafts, OEM Hatch Spoiler, Eurosport HP Underdrive Pulleys, FDM, 17" DS1 rims, M3 Front Struts & Springs, M3 Instrument Cluster, 3-spoke //M steering wheel with tri-color stitching, SSK, CCFL Angels in Depo projectors with 5k HIDs | | | 04-27-2010, 07:29 PM | #6 | Junior Member Join Date: Jun 2009 Location: Atlanta, GA Posts: 19 | Heh...I called Turner yesterday to see if they offered any kind of subframe reinforcement for our cars. They said they did a 6cyl swap 11 or 12 years ago and never saw any metal fatigue or problems from the subframe. Obviously I'll want to do beefier axles and an LSD. Was just making sure that I won't have any problems. I was looking at Ground Control coilovers (their full suspension, not the ****ty sleeves). I was going to get rears from an M coupe and M3 fronts. Obviously better brakes as well. | | | 04-27-2010, 09:32 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: Seattle Posts: 181 | ti / e30 rear subframe doesnt have any power handling issues. there's no benefit to going to a different rear other than gaining some adjustability settings | | | 04-27-2010, 09:34 PM | #8 | Junior Member Join Date: Jun 2009 Location: Atlanta, GA Posts: 19 | Right on. How low can our cars go before our rear suspension starts having problems? Front's a simple McPherson strut, so I assume the standard tricks will work for that? | | | 04-28-2010, 12:21 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | my rear end is only lowered an inch and the toe and camber are both way out | | | 04-28-2010, 03:31 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Cincinnati Posts: 890 | I haven't seen/heard of any issues with broken rear subframe parts due to excessive torque application. I know the Z3's have issues tearing apart the floor pans around the diff, but nothing known on the TI. The //MZ3 rear end is slightly beefier, but isn't a must have IMO. Given the cost of upgrading the entire rear suspension to the //MZ3, unless your building a track car its probably not worth it for the street. __________________ SOLD!!! 1999 332ti //M Sport Titanium Silver M3 S52 3.2 I-6 Engine, M3 Clutch w/ ti Getrag Trans, Z3 3.15 LSD medium case diff and half shafts, OEM Hatch Spoiler, Eurosport HP Underdrive Pulleys, FDM, 17" DS1 rims, M3 Front Struts & Springs, M3 Instrument Cluster, 3-spoke //M steering wheel with tri-color stitching, SSK, CCFL Angels in Depo projectors with 5k HIDs | | | 04-28-2010, 06:50 PM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: PA Posts: 283 | Been beating on my ti for a little bit now with a turbo'd M50. The same setup still looks like new in my e30 a year later. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
