Oh, it's on the clutch man. BMW incorrectly engineered some of the Getrag 250 transmissions (our transmission). Read my third post on list thread and you'll see what I'm talking about. They actually put out a memo. We were just unlucky. Look into it though because the memo says something about paying for labor or something.

As far as the rmps go, I don't have that issues. It's likely another problem altogether.

Can you help me out a little more in regards to the memo? Where do I find the complete memo and what can I do about it? Would I need to go to a BMW dealership to get this resolved? I hate to ask so many questions but I have had this issue for a few months now and just dont have much time to look into it with work and all.

Just take a portion of the memo I posted and google it... I'm not a mechanic man, just using the same resources we all have here.

i think it might be a sync gear going bad (or atleast that is what a friend thought, since his went on his car)

basicly, i am having trouble getting it into gear (not only first. seems to be only 1st gear and 5th gear if i try to go into it form neutral)

it grinds like a bitch once in awhile, and other times it is fine.. you can feel the resistance when trying to put it in, and when i feel it, i just pull out in 2nd .. and for shifting to 5, i just shift to 4th first, then into 5th..

the car probally has the original cluth at 135k miles. (made in 1998)

i know if i check the tranny fluid and i see gold flakes, then it is the sync gear, but i cant get any shops to drain it and fill it. they always check the lvl and tell me the lvl is fine.. but they dont wanna open it.. haha.. i dunno.. i dont wanna open it since i need to sealers and gaskets..

anyway .. you guys think its the sync gear? or cluth? any one have problems like that? should i just get both replaced? haha

If you have the original clutch in at +100k, you are the freaking man.

I've been under my car and checked out the tranny plugs and I don't see why there'd be any gaskets to replace... There are two plugs similar to your oil plug. One on the bottom to empty and one of the side to fill... All you need is a syphon pump and new tranny fluid I believe.

And I remember reading somewhere that the 1st and 5th gear are first to do when it's the syncro, but don't quote me on that.

Thanks for the response in regards to the memo. Throwing this out there just for kicks and props to BMW, the 95 ti I have has the original clutch in it and I am right at 223,328 miles. Most if not all of the first 200k were interstate miles when my dad owned the vehicle.

That's incredible. Kudos to BMW.
