Default Need rear wing

I need some downforce. I want to go flat through The Kink, but I need some aero to do so.

I plan to put a front splitter on this winter, but I can't seem to find a rear wing that will do the job--and fit on our stubby little rear deck.

I spotted this one in the photo competition:
http://www.318ti.org/gallery/data/1068/calendar/19.jpg

The one in the photo looks like it might work. Anybody know where to get it?

I saw several 318Tis with those little rear spoilers--do they actually work, or they just for appearance?

I know people will argue with me but rear wings are more show than go on these cars.

I recall PTG building a hatchback race car and they said that the spoiler needed to be very high to be of any use. As high as the roof line.
PTG knows a thing or two about building racecars.

I don't want one for show. I need one that actually works.

It needs to be pretty tall to be effective.

There is a thread on bf.c that might be worth reading.
Are Aero improvements really worth it?

Just need to remember that our cars are shaped differently.
What applies to E36 sedan/coupe does not apply to a hatchback.

I know there is at least one Compact BMW CCA Club Racer out there too.

The ltw wing is not aerodynamically efficient, it was created to compete within a strict rule set using parts found on a production car.

If you want a 2D wing (flat wing) it needs to be up high (at the roof line) to be effective. Newer style are the 3D wings like the APR GTC 300 which can be mounted lower on some cars.

pmilli's race car has a pretty beast wing.

We used the GTC300 on our Miata race car and had it 10" off the trunk which put it about 6" below the top of the hard top. We had to have it higher at first but developed a vortex generator for the top of the hardtop which helped keep the air stuck to the glass which not only lowered drag a bit but it allowed me to mount the wing lower without affecting the downforce, which also lowered the drag. Between the two we picked up a bit of time afterwards as well.

Needs to be really high, and back off the rear deck lid.

I'm not really sure what track/kink you are talking about, but what tires are you running? Better tire compound will make the largest difference in grip on a street car.

Or use a simple lip tail like a NASCAR spoiler, a 4" lip creates a lot of down-force on a hatch...

Cheers

>I'm not really sure what track/kink you are talking about

The Kink is at Road America. It's considered pretty dangerous, so more than one club limits speed through the Kink to 80 mph, enforced with a radar gun. Check YouTube for dozens of Kink videos.

Or check this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZh0sq9M5aw The Kink is at 1:13, 1:48 and 4:51 (where I have no traffic ahead but I lift anyway)

Without the radar gun, you can go through there flat at 110-120 if you have the stones for it, plus tires and aero. I always lift. Can't help myself.

I got a front splitter to put on this winter.

Big wings that would work are bloody expensive. I like the idea of a cheap spoiler, as PDX suggests.

Yep, gone through there 110mph on street tires.
I am going a different direction with my aero and will be selling my MAShaw evo wing. Extremely functional and the base is modified slightly to fit on a ti. Search aero in the track section for pics.

Can you be more specific? Is it the M-3 EVO PTG Style Adjustable Pitch Rear Spoiler? I don't know what photo to look for. How much?

Here's some pics and whatnot:

I honestly haven't done much research as far as listing the wing so I'll get back to you in a day or two

search for 357ti, he had a ti with a 5.7 chevy in it, a bud did a nice ductail spoiler on the rear, more race than decorative but I think it would be pretty effective based on other RWD hatchbacks I've done similar on....
