You probably don't have to move the battery if you're not going to use the secondary air pump. I'm not sure how the SMOG laws are here for an OBD-II engine in an OBD-I car. If you need to meet OBD-II you will need to use the SAP, but it can be relocated to keep the battery in the same spot. You may also have to add a fuel take pressure sensor as some ti's don't have them and will throw a code (P0451) on the six cylinder DME. If you want to move the battery anyway, the rest of the e36 use a distribution block by the right shock tower for jump starting and connecting the main power leads to. I don't know the path that the cable takes to the back of the car, but I'm going to be pulling one out of my M3 donor at some point. The various trunk parts MC900 talked about would also be needed if you want an OEM finish. | | | 06-13-2009, 02:40 AM | #18 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2009 Location: Ct Posts: 151 | I want to do the same thing, Taking whatever I can from the M3 coupe. I thought about just sinking it into where the tools for the spare are but its till way too big, even the stock battery in the ti is a bit too tall, I was considering using another battery that just fits down there, but I dunno, I'll figure it out as I go. the darn m3 battery is like 60 lbs though, which IMHO is DEFINITELY worth having in the rear, especially with the added front weight of the M engine. If I figure out a good solution I'll post it up, but I probably won't get around to it right away. | | | 06-13-2009, 02:52 AM | #19 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | JFYI, the Ti and M3 use the same battery. | | | 06-13-2009, 05:23 AM | #20 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: NJ Posts: 1,625 | I think this may be his set up... http://www.rogueengineering.com/Merc...gory_Code=BATT I like it & wanna fo the same thing. The dimensions for the slot in the ti trunk is way different. When I had my M3 donor car i measured and looked at the measurements and location of the slot in the back. The ti is just built narrower. Sucks. I may go the dyna-batt route in the end b/c i hate looking at the BIG original battery taking up space in the trunk. __________________ -Theta Chi- Float like a cadilac, sting like a BIMMER .... my socket is just too thick and won't fit in the hole! damnit! This one: http://www.apexbattery.com/miata-bat...batteries.html has close to 500 CCA's, 28 AH, and weighs 25 lbs... (this comares to the Dyna-Batt or Odyssey battery which has only 280cca's...) It should perform as well as a full size battery for my use (no major aftermarket audio or other electronics). What makes it really better than anything else is it's size! It actually fits in the right rear hatch area with the plastic bin removed and a few inches of trim and insulation trimmmed away... No structural changes, no loss of tool tray or spare tire either! Also, it is a truly sealed battery that requires no venting... I will take pictures of the process and the finished product when completed! __________________ James 95 active w/leather interior and sport interior conversion, Vaders, full M-Tech exterior conversion. You can't even see someting is changed in the trunk, this is how it looks like; __________________ S50B32, manual 6-speed, LSD, Z3 M rear axle, ///M sport package, 17" LTW's, Eibach Pro-Kit | | | 09-22-2009, 02:27 AM | #26 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | that's a really cool setup, don't ground your amp to the negative battery post though, use a chassis ground or you'll get feedback through the sub from it being tied into your electrical system, that cable's also much too long, you don't want it longer than 40 cm or so Last edited by tiFreak; 09-22-2009 at 06:31 AM. | | | 09-22-2009, 05:31 AM | #27 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | Doesn't make sense to me to relocate the stock battery.. You are just moving the same big piece of weight around and actually adding more weight to the car from the thick guage wire you are going to have to run.. Best batteries to get are any of the ones made by penn battery company.. This is the manufacturing company that makes Braille batteries. So if you can find big crank, deka, etc... they are identical to Braille. Braille just offers a longer warranty than the other companies that rebadge the penn batteries. Go with a 20 pound sealed AGM battery and you will be good to go. I'm running the 13 pound in my car and it has to be on a trickle charger to stay charged. Advance auto parts sells the penn batteries as powercrank 4-wheeler, motorcycle, and boat batteries. Don't be confused by the CCA rating that the manufacturer or retailer publish. Try to find actual testing data on the internet. My battery is rated for 200CCA and it actually tests at well over 380CCA at 70 degrees. | | | 09-22-2009, 05:49 AM | #28 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: norcal - 94590 Posts: 3,186 | I am trying to create a solution that anyone can utilize without losing the tools/spare/etc., or requires custom manufacturing. The Miata battery I'm, referencing is sold by Westco, and an alternate Bosch that is readily available at parts stores. It is an SLA battery like the Braille, Odyssey, Dyna-Batt that wouldn't require a constant trickle charger and be feasible for DD duties... Otherwise I would just use a Braille or Odyssey and be done with it... __________________ James 95 active w/leather interior and sport interior conversion, Vaders, full M-Tech exterior conversion.
