Default The M52 is in! just wont start :S

Im new to here and can now happily say i have a 328ti.. but after fitting the motor at the weekend i have come across an EWS problem and i really need help.. you dont know how much it hurts knowing thats the last thing left to do... Basically i have a 96 318ti and put the 96 328 motor in so there both ewsII, i swapped the ews box behind the glove box (one with yellow plug) and ive swapped the little box connected to the antenna on the ignition barrel (under the steering column) and ive also swapped the transponder chip off the 328 into my compact key.. and of course the 328 siemens DME that is matched to these boxes and chip, well i come to turn the key a wehey the fuel pump buzzes for a sec and the dash lights pop on like normal but the naff all there .. the car just doesnt turn over :S I need to know if i have swapped everything over? (bearing in mind i still have the 328 sat right next to my compact so i can source any parts still needed) or do i need something realigning ? which i shouldnt because i saw that Phamster swapped bits over and his started soo please can somebody help me its doing my nutt in!

Any help would seriously be appreciated.. would say come an have a local bevvy with me but im from the UK and most on here are from the US i see..

PS.. since ive done the swap i have taken progress pictures and will hopefully write up and add pics on here once i have the car running with peace of mind

Congrats on getting it all in.

I don't think you have an EWS problem. When the EWS system is preventing a startup, it shuts off the fuel pump and ingnition system. The engine will stil turn over, just won't start. Sounds like you have some other starter issue.

And just for the record, the transponder antenna around the ingnition key slot does not need to be swapped. Its just an antenna.

The key chip, EWS module and ECU is all that is required.

your welcome ..

i was thinking that too but i unplugged the ews module took the chip out the key and moved it away from the car and unplugged the antenna.. just to make sure the ews system would do its part, an i turned the key and fuel pump still buzzed for a second and went off.. maybe it just cuts off the injection side not the pump, maybe my ti was just EWSI not II,is there anyway of bypasing this system completely like just eliminating the ews completely or would this require stripping the ecu apart? anyway i dont want to be doing that really because the 328 started fine before i took the engine out and only problems occur now with it in the Ti.. ahhhh!

Well i thought id see if the starter is faulty .. so i got some wire and put one side on the black/yellow terminal on the starter an the other end on the black battery terminal, whilst the main red terminal was going directly to the starter from the battery , and there was nothing! did i ground the right wire or is this correct? and the starter is faulty?!?...

right well i shorted to starter out and the solenoid click ..but it doesnt click when i turn the key, only when i short the starter with some wire, i am confused can anyone help me? is it possible i knackered the ecu when swapping it over? oh and also i forgot to say that i snipped and connected wires 1 and 3 from the ews unit uner the dash so the current comes from the ignition to the starter straight away and theres still nothinwg when i turn the key... does this mean theres a problem with a connection or an earth somewhere.. i cant see there being a break in a wire because the ti worked fine just 2 days ago , one other thing i did (well my friend )when swapping the engine over was to cut through the engine loom between that middle box and the engine because it was all that was left holding engine in (yes very stupid i know) but anyway i soldered and heatshrinked every wire back in place following the wiring diagram im 100 percent sure its correct and connected right id put my life on it but i was just thinking that the solder can increase resistance and could possibly affect the ecu by sending in a slightly lower signal from lets say the ews for example so the ecu could be getting wrong information but im not sure about that.. and that shouldnt affect the starter anyway so im still stuck :S please help

it wouldnt hurt to double check the soldered wires

just tug on each of them and make sure they are secure

anyone? i have connected the wires 1 and 3 that go into the ews unit.. ones comes from the ignition and other from the starter motor area.. it just bypasses the starter part of the ews not the whole lot.. basically i crank the key and still nothing but the starter is fine when i short the cables out :S ahh god! i could of got a wire mixed up when puttin loom back on but im pretty sure i havent.. i connected the red alternator cable to the chun starter terminal aswell as connecting the chunky red one from the battery to the same terminal.. then i connected the blk/grn and blk/yel wires to the starter , they only fit in one place for eachof them because the blk/yel is larger.. oh an i also attached the red wire coming off of the chunky red battery cable to the side of the fuse box on that gold terminal .. as far as i can see thats everything to do with the starter and seem to all be in the right place here.. if anyone knows anything different please say..

I apologize skatnmidget it was an earth problem.. the earth going from the right engine mount to the chassis, it turns over now and the ews is working but it doesnt start :S i havent got the belt at the front attached which power the powersteering and fan, alternator ... does this need to be on to run even just to fire up? also i havent bolted to exhaust up yet only the headers are on.. will this affect it starting up?

glad you got that all figured out. now it seems like you need fuel or spark. i would get that belt. but it shouldnt stop the car from firing up. exhaust will cause a lose of backpressure but still it should fire up.

check for fuel and check for spark

after tinkering around, i found it sparks so thats ok, i sprayed starter fluid down the throttle bodyand it runs for a few seconds , so its the fuel system, i pulled the injectors with the rail off the mainfold and turned the engine over and they arent injecting fuel.. the fuel pump still works i hear it buzzing..also i have checked the fuel pump relay that is okay, and so is the fuel pump fuse.. any sugestions?

Do you have the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail or under the car?
